In just a couple of weeks, UP hits our shelves and if you think it's just a cartoon for kids, you are missing something special. The animation - as spectacular as it is - is secondary to the story in this case, a story that will have you reaching for Kleenex, cheering through laughter, and re-discovering your own inner child, just as Carl Fredricksen (voiced by Ed Asner) does.
At 78, Carl has gone from wide-eyed boy yearning for adventure, through adulthood with his beloved wife Ellie, into unhappy, lonely old age. Life is closing in on him. An overly ambitious 8-year-old Wilderness Explorer, Russell, comes into his life, wanting to earn his "Assisting the Elderly" badge...and before they know it, the two are off on the adventure of their lives.
To say anything more would spoil the surprises and poignancy of this film, but it is definitely a rare instance where adults will be just as spellbound as children. Pixar Studios has created one of the most original and amazing movies of the year, no strings attached, and set the bar higher than ever for themselves. As we hear in the film, "Adventure is out there!" and indeed, UP is a heart-warming adventure and story for all ages.
