Mind Matters!
We all know that it is important to keep both your body and your mind sharp at any age. Exercising the brain can actually improve memory function, increase awareness, and provide a better overall sense of wellness. But did you know about some of the interesting ways you can sharpen your mind at Darien Library?
Here are a few ideas to try:
Learn by listening! Discover a new topic, taught to you by some of the world’s top professors! We have a wonderful collection of The Teaching Company’s Great Courses audio books for you to check out, located in the Research Library on the 2nd floor. Become a scholar of Beethoven’s symphonies. Learn about the history of England, from the Tudors to the Stuarts. Study effective reasoning. Understand the human brain. Or listen to a course on 20th century American fiction. All from the comforts of your own home!
Practice, practice, practice! Visit our “Learning Express Library” database. This database is designed to help students of all levels improve their reading, math, writing, and comprehension skills…but who says kids have to have all the fun?! All you need is your Darien Library Card. Then, create a username & password, and you’ll have access to tons of mind-bending practice tests that will have you running circles around your children and grandchildren. Visit the “Skill Building for Adults” section to get you started.
Get involved! Attend our programs this spring that are designed to bring out your creative side, such as Storytelling for Adults, One Page Poetry Circle, Classics with a Twist, and our Spring Book Discussions. Come to one of our author events or our weekly Meet Us On Main Street chats and learn about some great new books to read! Or enjoy an afternoon at the movies with our Wednesday Film Matinee series. Find out more about these programs, visit our Events section.
Also, don’t forget to visit our bookshelf in the Main Reading Room on the 2nd Floor (located directly across from the elevator) for all of the most up-to-date information for Seniors, including the Darien/New Canaan AARP Newsletter, Senior Citizen’s Guide to Connecticut, Lifetime Learners Institute Brochure, Family Centers’ The Friendly Connector Newsletter, Darien Answer Book, and the latest issue of Out and About.
