Art on View

DHS Art Show
April 7th through May 19th

The work, creativity, and innovation of the Darien High School student body who have participated in the art curriculum will be on display. Traditionally, this show is open to only seniors at the high school – students who have developed their artistic talents and skills throughout each of their four years at Darien High School, and are now in their final semester.

The exhibit at Darien Library will represent work from upper level advanced courses. These visually talented individuals are now enrolled in the Honors Art course, Advanced Art, Advanced Photography, and Advanced Ceramics.

These art students specialize in drawing and painting, silk screen printmaking, photography, and the development of sculptural and functional forms in clay. Each of these students has responded to a variety of art forms that are inherent in the high school art curriculum. Classroom and studio units on self-portraiture, photographic montage, mixed media, plus exposure to the art movements in Surrealism, Minimalism, and Expressionism, are just some of the ways in which Darien High School art students are challenged in the development of their artistic expression.

Participating students are Karen Bergman, Haley Bilmaier, Adam Campbell, Peter Canning, Kim Carey, Isabel Castro, Lindsay Lyons, Samantha Malpass, Brekke McDowell, Sarah McKay, Nina Palmer, Sarah Ramsey, Cameron Rottner, Ali Shaw, Sarah Smith, Patricia Sullivan, Alexandra Tracy, Marina Vilela, Taylor Willis, Emma Witschi, and Alexandra Young.

There will be an artists’ reception at the Library on Friday, May 2, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Information for Artists
The Darien Library exhibits artwork in its Main Reading Room. Our desire is to offer the community an opportunity to benefit from viewing various forms of art in a cultural and educational setting. The Art Committee of the Darien Library reviews the work of interested artists based on submissions of their work. Great Blue Heron Sculpture

Genevieve C. Betts
A painting of Monemvasia, Greece was anonymously donated to the Darien Library in honor of Genevieve C. Betts, in recognition of her twenty-five years of service devoted to the Darien Library. Barbara Smith, Mrs. Betts’s daughter, painted the landscape.

Outdoor Sculpture
The Darien Library commissioned a sculpture from Elliot Offner for a piece that would stand in the courtyard of the library. In 1987 he completed a sculpture of the Great Blue Heron, which is indigenous to the shores of Connecticut. The bronze was the first piece of public sculpture in Darien. The symbol of the heron appears on the library's publications, commemorative tote bags and Web pages.
