Darien High School Internship Program

The Darien Library is looking for four Darien High School Senior interns during the 2015-2016 Spring Semester. Applications must be submitted by Friday, February 5th. Interviews will take place during the following week. Please read the internship descriptions below and then apply online.


User Experience Intern
Want to leave your mark on Darien? The User Experience (UX) department is looking for a creative, motivated, detail-oriented writer to help with content creation for a brand new LocalWiki project. As a UX intern, you will be writing about the ins-and-outs of Darien and doing some light historical research to make the Town's Wiki as informative as possible. You will be given the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to create engaging content that is both useful and interesting. This internship is designed for students who are interested in pursuing a career in communications, web design, and digital media.

You will learn:
* How to produce new content and write it in an interesting and appealing manner
* Appropriately source information, images, and artwork
* Maintain the LocalWiki as a live website and ensure the information is up-to-date

* Have excellent communication skills, both written and oral
* Be able to (or willing to learn how to) undertake research using a variety of sources
* Be creative, able to alter their style of writing to reflect their audience
* Be completely at ease in front of a computer
* Be self-directed and willing to work on their own initiative


Readers’ Advisor Intern
Do you love to read, enjoy talking about books and interacting with people? If so, you might be interested in an internship with the staff in the Readers' Advisory department of Darien Library. As an intern, you will work at the Welcome Desk, helping patrons check out books, registering new patrons, directing patrons to other parts of the library, taking book reservations, answering phone calls, shelving, displaying and recommending books to library patrons. Off-Desk time will be devoted to a small project related to the work of the department, such as online reader’s advisory, social media, book group services or booklists.

You will learn:
* Fantastic customer service skills, useful in any future job
* How to create customized book recommendations
* All operations and departments of the library; circulation and return of books; buying, processing and weeding of books; reference; technical services; user experience

* Responsible high school senior
* Strong computer and technology skills
* Capacity to perform detailed work consistently and accurately
* Ability to deal pleasantly and effectively with the public, as well as staff
* Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
* A love of books and reading and the ability to work collaboratively


Youth Services Intern
Do you enjoy working with youth? The Children’s Library and Teen Lounge are looking for a student who is passionate about YA literature and is friendly, creative, and has a penchant for technology. The Youth Services intern will assist with outreach visits, storytimes, and collection maintenance during the spring term. The student’s final project will be the planning, conducting, and evaluation of a program for kids/tweens.

You will learn:
* History of Children’s and Teen Services
* Collection overview and development
* Program planning and offerings
* Outreach services to the community

* Excellent customer service skills
* Passion for working with youth
* Strong technological aptitude
* Ability to work independently


Marketing Intern
Darien Library is looking for a creative thinker to work in our Marketing Department. The Marketing Intern will aid in managing the Library's social media accounts, creating press materials, and developing new initiatives to highlight Library services and collections. This is the perfect internship for a student looking to pursue marketing, public relations, or communications.

You will learn:
* How to draft, design, and create marketing materials including press releases, flyers, email blasts, and web-posts
* Social media analytics
* How to effectively market across different platforms and to different audiences
* Basics of graphic design principles and software

* Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
* Strong technological aptitude
* Creative thinker, open to trying things outside the box
* Social Media savvy
* Ability to work independently
