Art Databases

    Fine Arts and Music Collection Access to more than 150 full-text journals and magazines in the areas of drama, music, art history, and filmmaking.  All articles covered have been published between 1980 and 2012.  Includes access to the Wilson Art Index.  Search by keyword, subject, or publication title.

Recommended Websites 

    Archives of American Art Smithsonian’s research center dedicated to collecting, preserving, and providing access to primary sources that document the history of the visual arts in America.  Also a useful tool for locating artist papers and gallery records.

    Artcyclopedia An online encyclopedia dedicated to art history.  Search by artist name, artwork title, or museum for biographical information and to see museum holdings by artist.  Also features art news from around the world and includes browsable lists of artists by movements, nationalities, and subjects.

    NYPL Digital Gallery Access to digitized images from the New York Public Library’s collection including historical menus, illuminated manuscripts, historical maps, vintage posters, rare prints and photographs.

  • Proquest Newspapers - Search major newspapers online. You can select individual or multiple newspapers to search, including the New York Times Magazine and Book Review sections. For a complete list of newspapers indexed, click here.
  • Connecticut Historical Newspapers - This extensive online collection offers nearly 80 newspapers published between 1756 and 1914 in the State of Connecticut.
  • Darien News-Review and The Darien Times -Search full-text of local, national, and worldwide newspapers. The Darien News-Review (2001-current), The Darien Times (2003-current), the Hartford Courant (1991-current) and the Connecticut Post (2001-current) are among the newspapers available.
  • New York Times Historical - Search the full text of the New York Times from 1851 - 2002.
  • Hartford Courant Historical - Search the full text of the Hartford Courant from 1764 - 1922.
  • Newspaper Source Plus - More than 700 full-text newspapers, providing more than 33 million full-text articles. In addition, it features more than 757,000 television and radio news transcripts, including: ABC News (American Broadcasting Company), ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation), CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation), CBS News, CNBC, CNN, CNN International, FOX News, MSNBC, National Public Radio, PBS, and more.
  • World Newspapers- Search local, and national and worldwide newspapers. The Connecticut Post (since 2001), the Darien News-Review (since 2001) and the Hartford Courant (since 1991) along with other local papers are available in full-text. The Washington Post and the Christian Science Monitor are also available here.

Tax Information at the Darien Library

The Darien Library usually starts getting tax forms from the IRS in the beginning of the year. We can print tax forms from the IRS website year-round.

  • Free Credit Reports - A recent amendment to the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires each of the nationwide consumer reporting companies to provide you with a free copy of your credit report, at your request, once every 12 months.

  • MedlinePlus - MedlinePlus is the National Institutes of Health's Web site for patients and their families and friends. Produced by the National Library of Medicine, it brings you information about diseases, conditions, and wellness issues in language you can understand. MedlinePlus offers reliable, up-to-date health information.
  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - CDC′s Mission is to collaborate to create the expertise, information, and tools that people and communities need to protect their health – through health promotion, prevention of disease, injury and disability, and preparedness for new health threats.
  • Mayo Clinic - This site provides useful and up-to-date information and tools that reflect the expertise and standard of excellence of Mayo Clinic.
  • American Board of Medical Specialties - Checking on the Board Certification of your doctor is simply a click away. Registration is required but the site is free.
  • National Institute of Mental Health - A source of information about mental illness and mental conditions as well as the latest research on treatment.

  • Encyclopedia of Foods: A Guide To Health Nutrition - Experts at the Mayo Clinic, UCLA, and Dole have presented a beautiful, comprehensive, can't-miss source of information on everything and anything to do with nutrition. Part 1 provides suggestions on menu planning, grocery shopping, storage, and safety, as well as the ways that foods influence every aspect of health & well-being. Part 2 discusses individual foods from every food group and includes preparation and serving-size suggestions.
