2004 Nominees Nutmeg Children's Book Award

"The Nutmeg Children's Book Award encourages children in grades 4 - 6 to read quality literature and choose their favorite from a list of ten nominated titles.  Jointly sponsored by the Connecticut Library Association and the Connecticut Educational Media Association."

Listed below are the 2004 Nominees for the Nutmeg Children's Book Award.  These books will be on display in the Children's Room. Read them, then come in and vote for them the Children's Room in January 2004!


The Wanderer by Sharon Creech.
Cousins Sophie and Cody recount their eventful voyage across the Atlantic Ocean on their family's boat, the Wanderer. Adventure on the high seas.

The Power of Un by Nancy Etchemendy.
After exposing his sister to deadly peril, Gib Finney must mess with the future to undo his mistakes.

Babe and Me by Dan Gutman.
Using magical baseball cards, Joe and his father go back in time to visit Babe Ruth.

The Year of Miss Agnes by Kirkpatrick Hill. - Living in a small fishing settlement in Alaska in 1948, Fred is isolated from the wide world. But all that changes when a new teacher arrives to take over the one room school.

Spending his summer in Maine, Homer, along with a new friend, tries to uncover the mystery of his past life, especially the disappearance of his father.

The Kite Fighters by Linda Sue Park.
Two boys in ancient Korea celebrate the art - and pleasure - of kite making and flying. But when the king commands a special kite, the boys must battle tradition to fulfill his wishes as well as their own.

Walking to the Bus-Rider Blues by Harriette Gillem Robinet.
It is 1956 in Montgomery, Alabama, and Alfa Merryfield has larger problems than the upcoming bus boycott. Although he's only 12, he has his sister and grandmother to support, and the rent to pay. When the rent money disappears, Alfa determines to solve the mystery himself. An entertaining whodunit.

Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan. - Leaving her life of comfort in Mexico, Esperanza and her family try to establish a new life in California working as migrant laborers.

Love Ruby Lavender by Deborah Wiles. - When her grandmother leaves for Hawaii, Ruby Lavender is left to her own devices one summer in Mississippi. Ruby Lavender keeps herself occupied reading to her chickens, helping in the general store, and making new friends.

Gracie's Girl by Ellen Wittlinger. - Sick and tired of her parents' commitment to a homeless shelter, Bess seeks new experiences by volunteering for stage crew on the school play. But when she meets a homeless woman named Gracie, Bess is forced to reevaluate her beliefs about the homeless.
