News at (about) 12 on 12/12

I'm not sure how much rain we got between yesterday and this morning, but I passed lots of flooding on my drive in this morning. We are happy to see that the storm water retention system at the New Building is working just fine!  This (photo, right) is the bioswale. The bioswale is part of our green building's storm water management system. Bioswales are landscape elements designed to remove silt and pollution from surface runoff water. A common application of bioswales is around parking lots, where substantial automotive pollution is collected by the paving and then flushed by rain. The bioswale treats the runoff before releasing it to the watershed or storm sewer. Good for the Library. Good for the town. Good for the environment.

And as long as we're talking about the "green"-ness of our New Building, have you been by since the landscaping went in? Take a look. Isn't it grand?

Warming Trend

A little icy rain on Sunday morning made us remember to be wary on the roads but the colder temps also reminded us that we've got 99 hats and scarves on their way to the Domestic Violence Crisis Center. Our shout-out for helping hands for our 3rd annual knit-a-thon, brought the community together -- teens, adults, and children -- and their needles together, resulting in 52 hats and 47 scarves, which will be delivered to the shelters run by the Crisis Center. We put our hands together for you! Thank you so much! We look forward to offerering more opportunites to serve the community. Read about the enthusiasm that's already building for our new teen space!

Quilts For a Cause

Back in the summer, our Bookmania kids listened to the reading of ONE THOUSAND TRACINGS by Lita Judge, the story of an American family during World War II who helped supply German families with shoes. In keeping with the theme of the book of helping people in need, the kids decorated fabric squares to be made into quilts for needy children through Project Linus. The squares have been assembled into two quilts, which are being delivered to Yale-New Haven Hospital for sick children to cuddle up.

Tell Me A Story

Every year at this time, there's a special gathering that takes place all over the world and right in our backyard. Groups of five, 25, or 300 gather at libraries, schools, in churches and living rooms, and listen as storytellers spin their magic. Tellabration! is not just for children -- this special night is really storytelling for grown-ups.

Tellabration! began right here in Connecticut back in 1988 and has become a state-wide, country-wide, international celebration. Our local Tellabration! is one of the biggest gatherings and is held at the United Church of Rowayton on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. This year, it's November 22. Storytellers Carol Birch, Kathy Jarombek, Lot Therrio, David Kantor, and a local student will be featured, each one worth the price of admission to see and hear. Join us to support the Connecticut Storytelling Center's school and community programs and enjoy an unforgettable evening!

Attention Parents of Autistic Children....

photo courtesty of Flickr user lepiaf.geo

If you're the parent of a child with autism, I'd like to discuss starting a new program specially designed for your kids!

Once we move to the New Darien Library, we will be offering lots of programs for all ages and we hope that kids of all abilities join us.  I understand, however, that many parents of autistic kids are uncomfortable joining regular storytimes.  That's where "Stories on the Spectrum" comes in.  It would be a story program for children on the autistic spectrum and their siblings, parents, and/or caretakers.

The primary focus is to simply allow the children a space in which to explore and express themselves in the way they feel most comfortable. But mostly, it's about making them feel good about themselves and having a fun time.  We might read a few books (but maybe not, depending on how we are all feeling that day), we usually sing some songs using our hands or bodies to show the actions, we might look at some pictures and discuss what we see, we might play pretend games, or use art materials to create things.  Every autistic child is different and communicates uniquely, so I like to offer a variety of activities, materials, and levels of interaction.

If this type of program sounds like something your child(ren) and you might be interested in, or if you have ideas, suggestions, or questions, I'd like to hear from you!  Please email me at kparrott@darienlibrary.org

I'm looking forward to seeing you at our New Darien Library!

Veterans Day is...

... on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Armistice Day was first commemorated on November 11, 1918 to mark the end of the Great War (now known as World War I). In 1954, President Eisenhower signed legislation changing the name of the day to Veterans Day. For clarification on the spelling of Veterans Day, the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day, the other Frequently Asked Questions, the department of Veterans Affiars has a website devoted to the holiday.

For those of you wondering whatever happened to the fourth Monday in October, the Army's site on the history of Veterans Day offers a detailed history of the observance (it was moved to October to make a three day weekend during the 1970s, then moved back to November 11th in response to public sentiment).

Here in Darien, Veterans Day ceremonies will be held at the Veterans Memorial Circle in front of Town Hall. Hosted by Jeff Calcott, senior vice commander of the Darien VFW, participants will include members of the Monuments & Ceremonies Commission, First Selectman Evonne Klein, and members of the scouting community. This Veterans Day marks the 90th anniversary of the end of World War I.

Help spread the word...

...about Aging in Place in Darien!

Did you know that there is a project of The Community Fund of Darien that offers free membership and provides the following services and information to seniors 65+?

  • Free referral to local programs and vetted service providers, such as handymen, electricians, dog walkers, book-keepers, caregivers, computer assistance, grocery shoppers, transportation, long-term care advice, Medicare/Medicaid assistance, counseling, health and wellness programs, problem solving, assessment of your needs, and coordination of assistance;

  • Free Out & About Newsletter highlighting senior services, upcoming events, health tips and ideas for living at home safely;
  • Free Senior Resource Directory of local services that benefit seniors.

Yes, it's true...and we need your help spreading the word to family members, neighbors, friends, and co-workers who you think might be able to benefit from all of this wonderful, free information!

You see, two years ago, members of Darien's non-profit organizations, churches, and businesses gathered together with community activists to assess the needs of our seniors and begin an intiative to provide services that would enhance their quality of life at home. Aging in Place in Darien was born, and since that time, the AIP committee has been working hard to ensure the project's mission to help seniors live independently, comfortably, and with dignity in their own homes for as long as they desire.

If you would like to sign up for Aging in Place membership (and why wouldn't you?!) or for more information, please contact Alyssa Israel at The Community Fund by calling 203-202-2912 or emailing AIPcoordinator@communityfunddarien.org.
