Monday at Seven - with talk about employment negotiations
Our next Monday at Seven meeting will be on Monday morning, December 21st.
We will open our doors from 7 to 9 a.m. to provide a resource and meeting center for residents of Darien and Darien Library members.
The speaker on Monday, December 21st will be Julia Murphy, who will talk about employment negotiations.
Julia Murphy has practiced since 1989, primarily in the field of employment law. In addition to her experience representing plaintiffs, she has significant experience handling employment law and human resources issues in the financial service industry. Her practice is focused on professional and executive counseling and employment agreements, including non-competition and severance agreements. She earned her B.A. magna cum laude from Mount Holyoke College and her J.D. from NYU Law School. She is admitted in Connecticut.

Code Talking
Back in 1947, area codes were introduced in North America and on this date in 1951, the very first long distance call without operator assistance was completed (the mayor of Englewood, New Jersey called the mayor of Alameda, California). Today we take area codes and direct dialing for granted...but in Connecticut, that's all about to change.
Starting this Saturday, November 14, two new area codes are being overlaid in both the 203 and 860 regions. That means even if you're making a local call, you have to include the area code. Nobody's phone number is changing, no new charges for local calls will go into effect, but we'll all have to re-program speed dials, fax machines, alarm systems, call forwarding settings, and everywhere else our numbers are embedded. Think of it as Y203K...no bunkers or canned goods necessary.
So if you're trying to reach us, don't forget to add the 203 area code no matter where you're calling from, and we'll all avoid telephone-related hang-ups!

What's Up with Our Kids?
On October 12, 2009 from 7 - 9 p.m., Tim Duffey, a Search Institute Trainer, will present Darien's results from the Search Institute Attitudes and Behavior survey.
The presentation will help attendees understand the concept of Developmental Assets, the survey resulrs and their implications and it will apply the survey results to the attendee's own experiences and perceptions.
Duffey will present the Search Institute's findings in Darien High School Auditorium. For more information, call The Community Fund of Darien at 655-8775.
Important News from Town Hall
We've just received this information from Town Hall about Code Red Notification Registration.
Now that it is hurricane season, Town officials would like to remind residents about the “Code Red Emergency Notification System” now available in Darien. Emergency Management Director Marc McEwan describes this as an extremely high speed telephone communication system that can deliver important messages to registered users at home, at work and to cell phones. Currently the system will only reach those who have commercially available telephone numbers. Anyone with a cell phone or unlisted number will not be contacted unless they register which is easily done on the Town’s website www.darienct.gov.

Tonight at the Library: The 3/50 Project
Cinda Baxter, the Founder of The 3/50 Project, will speak at the Library at 6 p.m. on September 8. This event is free and open to the public.
Relying on the simple premise “Pick 3, spend 50, save your local economy,” The 3/50 Project exploded onto the national stage as a way to help brick and mortar businesses reclaim consumer dollars in a positive, effective manner.
Cinda Baxter (pictured) understands small business from the inside out, having once been a retailer herself. As recipient of two national Retailer Excellence Awards and frequent press coverage, she now “pays it forward” to business owners and vendors through her consulting company Always Upward, and as founder of The 3/50 Project that Fox Business News refers to as “the formula that could save some local businesses that might not otherwise survive the recession.”
