A Good Time to Talk Lyme

An important film about Lyme Disease!

Coming soon to theaters...SOONER to Darien Library!

UNDER OUR SKIN

Thursday, May 7 at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30)

“Under Our Skin” is a dramatic tale of microbes, medicine, and money. This groundbreaking documentary investigates the human, medical, and political dimensions of Lyme disease, an emerging epidemic destroying countless lives.
Following the stories of patients and physicians as they battle for their lives and livelihoods, the film is meant to open viewers’ eyes to a danger in their own backyards. “Under Our Skin” was an Audience Choice Award Finalist at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Lyme disease is one of the most misunderstood and controversial illnesses of our time. Because the disease is difficult to test accurately, tens of thousands of people go undiagnosed - or misdiagnosed - with such conditions as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, autism, MS, and ALS. Each year, many of these patients are told that their symptoms are “all in their heads.”

Our showing of the film is well-timed, as this is the time of year that the adult deer ticks are easier to spot, and when most people, especially children, become infected.

According to research conducted by Dr. Eva Sapi of the University of New Haven, 60% of ticks that were tested in our area are infected with the bacteria that causes Lyme disease.

This film is not recommended for children or young teens. Running time is approximately 105 minutes. There will be a question and answer period following the film.

Those wishing to learn more about the film may visit www.UnderOurSkin.com.

Are we all on the same page?

Join us on February 23rd throughout the day as we kick off our first-ever One Book, One Community program!

Here at the Library, we may not always agree on what constitutes the perfect book to curl up with on a snowy winter day, or which selections should be nominated for national awards - but it can be said with certainty that we all agree that books can be an ideal way to open the paths to dialogue on just about anything.

So when the Darien community was put to task by the Human Services Planning Council to create programming that supports its CARE Darien initiative of encouraging the town to collectively make positive changes in the ways that we interact with one another, the Library knew just where to start. The Book Thief

On February 23rd, Darien Library will be launching its very first One Book, One Community program. One Book, One Community encourages everyone in town to read the same book and then come together to explore its themes through discussions, seminars, and workshops. Our selection is The Book Thief  by Markus Zusak, a New York Times bestseller and award-winning novel, and we hope you'll find this read as enjoyable, touching, mesmerizing, and meaningful as we have.

Come to our kickoff to check out your copy of The Book Thief and enjoy some homemade confections. Experience the "domino effect," one of the themes of the book, with dominoes and other contemplative games scattered throughout the Library. And experience Reader's Theater on Main Street from 3 to 6 p.m., when passages from the book will be performed by students from Darien High School's Theatre 308.

Also, continue to check our website and your mailbox for more information on the programs we have planned during March and April for this first-ever town-wide reading event!

Play. Reflect. Construct. We’re building a better community!

Actors/Playwrights Workshop Series at Darien Library

The Catherine Lindsey Actors/Playwrights Workshop is excited to announce that the Actors/Playwrights Workshop, now in its 17th year, will present a series of workshops here at the Darien Library. The playwright participants will workshop their plays at the following sessions:

Workshop #1: Thursday, January 22, 7 – 9 p.m.
Workshop #2: Thursday, February 19, 7 – 9 p.m.
Workshop #3: Thursday, March 19, 7 – 9 p.m.
Workshop #4: Thursday, April 16, 7 – 9 p.m.
Workshop #5: Thursday, May 21, 7 – 9 p.m.
Workshop #6: Thursday, June 11, 7 – 9 p.m.
Workshop #7: Saturday, June 13, 2:30 – 4:30 p.m.

On Sunday, June 14 at 2:30 p.m., the Actors/Playwrights Workshop will present the first public-staged reading of selections from the plays in our Community Room.

The Actors/Playwrights Workshop welcomes Actors’ Equity actors and non-Equity actors to participate, brings together local and regional playwrights and actors, and encourages a collaborative effort to create new plays and present a public-staged reading. Co-founded by the late Catherine Lindsey and her husband Robert, the workshop introduces original plays in progress to be developed in a workshop environment with the goal of the public-staged readings. Catherine Lindsey was a beloved friend of the Library and director of Darien Library Theater for over 25 years. The memorial workshops will offer actors and playwrights the opportunity to work together to create original theatrical works in a supportive and creative environment.

The participating playwrights and actors will attend seven workshops here at Darien Library. For each session, the playwrights will be required to bring up to 10 pages of an unproduced and unpublished work-in-progress with sufficient copies for each character to be read by actors who attend. Time permitting, each submission will be read by participating actors at each session, followed by a short discussion led by Robert Cusack and Bridget Cusack.

The Actors/Playwrights Workshop welcomes all interested playwrights and actors, with or without experience, to join. The sessions offer actors and playwrights the opportunity to work together to create original theatrical works in a supportive and creative environment, culminating in the June 14 program, which will feature staged readings of short scenes from full-length plays, one-act plays, musicals, and monologues.

To register and/or for more information, contact Robert Cusack at (203) 655-7699 or at bob.cusack@inscapllc.com.

Warming Trend

A little icy rain on Sunday morning made us remember to be wary on the roads but the colder temps also reminded us that we've got 99 hats and scarves on their way to the Domestic Violence Crisis Center. Our shout-out for helping hands for our 3rd annual knit-a-thon, brought the community together -- teens, adults, and children -- and their needles together, resulting in 52 hats and 47 scarves, which will be delivered to the shelters run by the Crisis Center. We put our hands together for you! Thank you so much! We look forward to offerering more opportunites to serve the community. Read about the enthusiasm that's already building for our new teen space!
