Donate Blood and Your Library Fines are Waived

From 1:00 p.m. until the last appointment at 6:15 p.m.
Darien Library will be hosting the American Red Cross for a blood drive in August. Registration that day will be in the Community Room then donations will occur in the Red Cross' specially equipped bus in the parking lot. Visit the Red Cross' website to schedule an appointment.
Blood donors are eligible to have their overdue fines waived (does not apply to bills or replacement charges).
Facts about blood donation from the Red Cross
- Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood.
- The blood used in an emergency is already on the shelves before the event occurs.
- A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood.
- Roughly 1 pint of blood is given during a donation.

Come Celebrate the Woods and Streams of Darien

The Darien Land Trust and Friends of Selleck’s Woods invite the Darien community to a Celebration of the Woods & Streams, a free event of fun and learning for children and adults at Dunlap/Selleck’s Woods on Sunday, June 10th from 11 AM – 3 PM.
Funded by a grant from the Long Island Sound Study, this free event will offer exhibits, games, food, music and the beauty of one of Darien’s loveliest Open Spaces.
Among the activities will be Woodland Exhibits and Nature Guides along Discovery Trails, including Guided Bird Tours, learning about Frogs, Turtles & Salamanders from our Woods & Streams; Native Plant Garden; I Spy Corner and Bird Identification; Pony Tree and Tree Identification; Vernal Pond, Dunlap Lake & the Critters in them; Butterfly Gardens; Building Fairy Houses.
There will also be a series of Village Exhibits including Audubon at Home – Lawns & Plants for Birds; SoundWaters Shows the Watershed; Project Services for the I-95 Rest Stop Restoration; Storm Water Run-off and Non-Source Point Pollution, as well as tips on How to Green Your Garden.
Come one, come all and join in the Celebration of the Woods & Streams.

Head towards Norwalk on the Post Rd., turn right at Trader Joe’s onto Kings Hwy North. Immediately after you go over I-95, turn right onto Parklands Drive and continue past the office buildings. Follow the signs for parking.

Whooping Cough in Darien

In reviewing collected data from the Darien Department of Health, we find that there have been 20 reported cases of pertussis (Whooping Cough) in town since 2008. Officially, that is 4 cases per 21,000 people. At first glance that may not seem to be a high number of cases; however, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), data from 2009 reports that the national incidence of pertussis is 1.1 per 21,000 people.

May 2012 Local Theater Shows

Fairytales are hot this year from ABC's "Once Upon a Time" to two retellings of Snow White at the movie theater. Westport Country Playhouse joins the fray with the fairytale musical, "Into the Woods" which plays till May 26th. Similarly, if you enjoy musical television shows like "Glee," you should head over to Westchester Broadway Theatre to see "Hairspray" by June 3rd. Unwanted Drug Disposal Day

Saturday, April 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Town Dump
The Darien Health Department and the Darien Police Department in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have scheduled another National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. This is a great opportunity for those who missed the previous events, or who have subsequently accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs, to safely dispose of those medications.
So clean out your medicine cabinet and safely dispose of those unwanted drugs to help prevent their misuse or improper disposal on Saturday, April 28.
Crazy for Quilts: Scrapbooks in Silk and Satin

Come visit the Darien Historical Society to see elegant, silk, and crazy quilts from our collection. A suggested donation of $5 is asked of non-members.
Opening reception is on Sunday, April 29th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. (suggested donation of $5 for non-members).
A Lecture & Coffee with noted quilt expert and author, Sue Reich is on Thursday, May 10th at 10:00 a.m. RSVP: $15/$20 (members/non-members).

Darien Rowayton Bank will be holding a community service on May 12th to shred documents and again the Wellness Bus will be on site that day from 9 – 12. Visit the Stamford Hospital’s Mobile Bus at the Darien Rowayton Bank on Saturday, May 12th from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm to perform digital mammograms. Insurance accepted, but no-cost mammograms will be covered by The Breast Cancer Alliance and The Susan G. Komen Grant for uninsured and low income women.
Protect yourself from identity theft by bringing your confidential documents to have them shredded on site while you watch. This is a free community service.
