Garden Club decks the Library's halls

Main Street is ready for the holidays.
Main Street is ready for the holidays.

It's beginning to look a lot like the holidays at the Library. Earlier this week, members of the Garden Club of Darien came by to decorate the Library withtrees and wreaths in what has become an annual tradition over the course of several decades.

“The Garden Club of Darien does do it every year, and obviously we reuse things from year to year, but we added a few more wreaths this year,” said Cyndy Stamm, a past president of the Garden Club. “Because the Library is so big, we’ve gotten big wreaths.”

Some of the wreaths measure 5 feet in diameter, and all were made by hand by members of the Garden Club.

“It probably took us about two days to make all of these,” Garden Club member and past president Sally MacGuire said Monday as she and other members prepared to deck the Library’s halls. She said the Garden Club has been decorating the Library for about 40 years.

There are lots of opportunities to come by and check out the decorations, including this Sunday’s performance by the Princeton Tigertones.

Calling All Playwrights!

The Catherine Lindsey Actors/Playwrights Workshop is excited to announce that the Actors/Playwrights Workshop, now in its 20th year, will present a series of workshops at Darien Library.

Interested playwrights should submit ten pages of their scripts to Robert Cusack at robert.cusack1@att.net by February 1, 2012.

The playwright participants will workshop their plays at the following sessions:

Thursday, February 16 from 7 – 9 p.m.
Thursday, March 15 from 7 – 9 p.m.
Thursday, April 12 from 7 – 9 p.m.

The workshops will allow the playwrights to refine their scripts, which will then be submitted to the Darien Library Selection Committee.

On Sunday, June 10 at 2 p.m., the Actors/Playwrights Workshop will present the first public-staged reading of selections from the plays in the Library’s Community Room.

The Actors/Playwrights Workshop welcomes Actors’ Equity actors and non-Equity actors to participate, brings together local and regional playwrights and actors, and encourages a collaborative effort to create new plays and present a public-staged reading.

Co-founded by the late Catherine Lindsey and her husband Robert, the workshop introduces original plays in progress to be developed in a workshop environment with the goal of the public-staged readings. Catherine Lindsey was a beloved friend of the Library and director of Darien Library Theater for over 25 years. The memorial workshops will offer actors and playwrights the opportunity to work together to create original theatrical works in a supportive and creative environment.

The Actors/Playwrights Workshop welcomes all interested playwrights and actors, with or without experience, to join. The sessions offer actors and playwrights the opportunity to work together to create original theatrical works in a supportive and creative environment, culminating in the June 10 program, which will feature  six staged performances. The musicals, monologues, short scenes from full-length and one-act plays to be performed will be chosen by the Darien Library Selection Committee.

When writing your piece please keep in mind that the number of cast members is limited, only one play may be submitted per person, and plays must be 10-minutes long or less.

To register and/or for more information, contact Robert Cusack at (203) 655-7699 or at robert.cusack1@att.net.

New Art in the Lower-Level Gallery

The Darien Library’s Art Gallery is hosting a new art exhibit, entitled “Seasons and Celebrations: Children’s Art from Around the World,” in the Library’s lower level through Jan. 11, 2012.

The installation brings 35 pieces of art to the gallery; each piece of holiday-themed art is created by a child between the ages of 7 and 15. The artists are located in more than a dozen countries around the world including Chile, Latvia, Russia, Japan, New Zealand and the United States.

The art is being provided by Creative Connections, a Norwalk-based non-profit international culture exchange that facilitates art-based exchanges throughout the world. It is being co-sponsored by PG Properties.

The new exhibit takes the place of the collection of abstract paintings of Linda George, which hung in the gallery between Oct. 3 and Nov. 9. As always, the exhibit is free.

Get Rid of Unwanted Prescription Drugs

On Saturday, October 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Darien Health Department in conjunction with the Darien Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription (and over-the-counter) drugs.  Bring your medications for disposal to the Darien Dump & Town Garage at Ledge Rd.  The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

The upcoming National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.  More than seven million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health.  Each day, approximately, 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America.  Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet.

DEA in conjunction with state and local law enforcement agencies throughout the United States conducted National Prescription Drug Take Back Days on Saturday, September 25, 2010 and April 25, 2011.  Nearly, 4,000 state and local law enforcement agencies throughout the nation participated in these events, collecting more than 309 tons of pills. Proper disposal of medications is also important in protecting the environment since low levels of prescription drugs have been detected in surface and groundwater in various locations throughout the country.

So to protect the environment and the health of our children, please:

  • clean out the medicine cabinets
  • leave the meds in the original containers
  • block out any personal identifying information
  • bring those prescription and over- the-counter meds to the special collection area at the Transfer Station on Saturday, October 29!
  • Never flush meds down the toilet!

Please note that this collection effort is for drugs only. No other items such as needles or hazardous materials will be accepted.
