French Royalty: Love, Fashion, and Style

Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette were over-the-top outrageous, fashionable, and glamorous. All of which makes for great reading and divinely illustrated books.

We know French Women Don’t Get Fat but now we know how the French defined style with Joan DeJean’s The Essence of Style: How the French Invented High Fashion, Fine Food, Chic Cafés, Style, Sophistication, and Glamour.

Antonia Fraser’s new book Love and Louis XIV: The Women in the Life of the Sun King studies the monarch’s relationships with his mother, his queen and the many mistresses he kept.

And just in time for Sophia Coppola’s movie, Marie Antoinette, Caroline Weber gives us Queen of Fashion: What Marie Antoinette Wore to the Revolution. The book examines the various stages in Marie Antoinette's life from the perspective of the fashions that she popularized. The Sophia Coppola movie, staring Kirsten Dunst, is based on Antonia Fraser's book Marie Antoinette: The Journey.
