Short novels for the short list.

The short list for the Man Booker Prize for fiction is filled with novels popular with Darien Library readers. And the short list’s rich, satisfying novels are short!

Jordon Pecile’s book group will discuss On Chesil Beach in October. This novel, written by Ian McEwan, the author of Saturday and Atonement, is a subtle exploration of the sexual politics of the sixties.

A few of us picked up an advance of Mister Pip at Book Expo this year and already knew it was an extraordinary work worthy of recognition. The plot: A village on a tropical South Pacific island is caught in the middle of frightening events. A reclusive Englishman is the only white man left in the village when he reopens the village school and introduces the children to Mr. Dickens through Great Expectations. The story: fiction has dangerous consequences.

And The Reluctant Fundamentalist has been getting rave reviews from our patrons. It was written by Mohsin Hamid who was born in Pakistan, studied at Princeton and Harvard Law, and now lives in London. The story is about a young Muslim man who leaves Pakistan to study and work successfully in the United States until 9/11 and the aftermath, when he suddenly finds himself regarded with suspicion.
