Storytime Registration begins December 1st!

Remember to visit the Children's website on or after Thursday, December 1st to register for Winter 2006 storytime. But don't stress. It's a lottery registration, so parents have until Friday, January 6th to submit an online or in-person registration, and there's no advantage to registering early versus later in the month (except to mark one thing off your to-do list!). Parents will need a Library card to complete the registration.

Visit our website after December 1st to register.

Ideas for Gift Giving

happye.gif
Shopping. Some of us can't wait for that crisp winter air that means sales, giftgiving, and smiles (we hope!). Others just want to get the job done. The good news for everyone is that the Children's Room presents its annual Ideas for Gift Giving list that should help you polish off reading gifts for preschoolers, middle readers, and teens. Composed almost entirely of new titles, the list celebrates some of the stars of this year's publishing for children, and I encourage you to take a peek.

Pick the Winners

caldecott.jpg While registration doesn't begin until December 1st, I wanted to give parents and kids a heads-up about our upcoming Book Award Buffs programs. This is our second year offering kids a chance to participate on our Library award committees, and we're looking forward to another great session of discussion, evaluation, and of course, food.

What's it all about? These programs challenge kids to predict the winners of this year's Caldecott and Newbery Award books. With the other members of your committee, discuss, recommend, and decide this year's best books. There are two different programs:

Caldecott Kids for grades 2 & 3 meets: Tuesdays 12/13, 1/3, 1/17, 1/31 from 4:30 - 6 p.m. Light dinner provided. Children will evaluate books at the each meeting, with no advance preparation required.

Newbery Visionaries for grades 4 & 5 meets: Wednesdays, 12/14, 1/4, 1/18, 2/1 from 4:30 - 6 p.m. Light dinner provided.Children are asked to read 1 book for each of the 3 first meetings; books will be available beginning December 1st.

Interested? Register your child beginning December 1st. It's a wonderful opportunity to be part of something special at the Library.

Chasing Down Good Mysteries

ssecret.jpg dtrhole.jpg
I've had the pleasure of reading two excellent mysteries this fall, which I'm happy to share with my fellow mystery lovers, children and adults.

Shakespeare's Secret has a wonderful literary flavor, and stars a young girl named Hero who searches for a diamond hidden in her new house. The author, Elise Broach, lives in Connecticut.
Down the Rabbit Hole is a dramatic mystery... literally. While acting in an adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, Ingrid investigates the cast for their involvement in a recent murder.
