Technology Assists for your Family

Nobody is perfect, but every child can develop a toolbox of school skills. Make a New Year's Resolution to help your child learn good study skills. These Library workshops, back by popular demand, can help. Learn to navigate the Library, its specially developed homework resources, and even participate in a 'parents-only' class designed for parents and teachers. Your child will save time... and impress their teacher. Sign ups begin January 2; phone us at 655-1234 x117.

Library Detectives
Grades 3 to 4. Learn about the Library’s online catalog with instruction on finding children’s books. This class meets in the Children’s Room.
-Thursday, February 7 from 4 to 5 p.m.
-Wednesday, February 13 from 4 to 5 p.m.

Online Adventures
Tuesday, February 5 from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m.
Grades 4 to 5.
Learn techniques to navigate the Library's online homework resources and then use those skills in a technological scavenger hunt. This class meets in the Darien Technology Foundation Center at the Darien Library. Parents of participants are Darien Residents, employed in Darien, or contribute to the Darien Library's Annual Campaign at the $300 level. Parent Advantage: Online Workshop
-Wednesday, January 30 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
-Thursday, February 7 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Parents of elementary and middle school children will learn about online Library resources that help with schoolwork. Presentations include online test prep software, databases, and instruction using the Library catalog. Register for one date.

Forget Iowa, we have January 2

While much of the country may be looking for answers in the early January Iowa caucus, we in the Children's Room are looking forward to January 2 as our day of decision.

And here's why. On January 2, registration begins for many of our winter programs. Here is a short list of programs that begin registration on January 2. For all these programs, register by calling the Children's Room at 655-1234 x117.

Preschoolers

Music and Movement with Miss Mary
Fridays 11 to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 1 to Apr. 4 (does not meet Feb. 22 and Mar. 21)
For walkers up to 3 years. Each child may choose 2 sessions to attend.

Creative Corner
Join us for a toddler bookgroup. This sensory program will explore nature, crafts, and books.
Ages 18 to 30 months and a parent/caregiver. Register for one 4-week session.
-Tuesdays 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. Jan. 29 to Feb. 26 (does not meet Feb. 19)
-Fridays 9:30 to 10 a.m. Feb. 1 to Feb. 29 (does not meet Feb. 22)
-Tuesdays 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. Mar. 4 to Mar. 25
-Fridays 9:30 to 10 a.m. Mar. 7 to Apr. 4 (does not meet Mar. 21)

Elementary School Children

Nutmeg @ Nite
Tuesday, January 22 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, January 23 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Grades 3 to 6. Test your Nutmeg knowledge. Children who have read at least six of this year’s intermediate nominees are invited to register for one evening of trivia. Spectators ages 6 and up are welcome to cheer. “Nutmeg @ Nite” celebrates Connecticut’s own Nutmeg Book Award. Registration is January 2 to January 21.

Nutmeg Book Group
Grades 4 to 6. Join us for a book discussion of the newest Nutmeg Book Award titles to be announced statewide on February 1, 2008. Light dinner is provided.
-Wednesday, Feb. 27 from 6 to 7 p.m. Title will be announced Feb. 1.
-Wednesday, Mar. 26 from 6 to 7 p.m. Title will be announced Feb. 1.
-Thursday, Apr. 24 from 6 to 7 p.m. Title will be announced Feb. 1.

Scrapbooking Workshop
Thursday, February 21 st at 2 p.m.
Grades 3 to 5. Create a scrapbook keepsake page! Materials will be provided. Students should bring photographs of family.

Windy Wednesday Kitemaking
Wednesday, March 19 at 4 p.m.
Grades 2 to 5
A kitemaking workshop; it will be perfect for a windy spring day.

Nutmeg @ Nite 2008

Do you HAVE... the Strength of Hercules, the Wisdom of Athena, or the Power of Zeus? Join one of our four Mt. Olympus teams and find out! This year's Nutmeg @ Nite will be an Ancient Greek themed evening.

The Darien Library presents our 5th Annual Nutmeg @ Nite quiz show!!! Readers in grades 3 to 6 who have read at least 6 of this year's intermediate nominees are eligible to play. Test your Nutmeg knowledge and win prizes. Nutmeg @ Nite celebrates Connecticut's own Nutmeg Book Award.

How to Participate
> Register for either Tuesday, January 22 or Wednesday, January 23. Game time is 6 to 7:30 p.m.
> Register from January 2 through January 21
> Spectators ages 6 and up are welcome to cheer
> Parents of participants and audience members are to remain in the Library

There Is Still Time to Register!

Registration for Winter 2008 storytimes is ongoing through January 7, so stop by our website to complete your registration online. Storytimes are available for children birth to six years. We'll also be continuing our popular Creative Corner Toddler Bookgroup and Music and Movement with Miss Mary, and sign ups for those programs begin January 2nd.

We look forward to seeing many children this winter in storytime!
