Join us for an introduction to our online homework resources and a technological scavenger hunt!

Parent Advantage: Online Workshop
Thursday, February 7 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Parents of elementary and middle school children will learn about online Library resources that help with schoolwork. Presentations include online test prep software, databases, and instruction using the Library catalog. Register for one date at 655-1234 x117.
Eligible parents are Darien residents, Friends of the Library at the $300 annual level, or employed full time in Darien.

Nutmeg Bookgroups on the Horizon

Take a Break - February Break Movies

Join us for children's movies during the February break. I highly recommend The Last Mimzy. Sometimes I like it better than E.T. (Stifled gasp).

February Vacation Movie: The Last Mimzy
Grades K and up. Rated PG. 97 minutes. Emma and Noah find a box containing a stuffed rabbit named Mimzy, which takes them on an adventure through time and space. Free tickets will be distributed 15 minutes prior to the program.

Wednesday, February 20 at 10 to 10:30 a.m.
February Vacation Movie: Antarctic Antics
Ages 3 and up. 35 minutes. Based on the picture book by Judy Sierra that stars penguins dancing, singing, and performing poetry. Free tickets will be distributed 15 minutes prior to the program.

New Children's Books in Philly

The Children's Librarians were in Philadelphia last weekend for an American Library Association conference!

That means that we heard about lots of new books coming out in 2008! These include a sequel to Evil Genius by Catherine Jinks, new books by Meg Cabot, and more!

National Children's Book Award Winners Announced

At a big press conference in Philadelphia, this year's children's national book award winners were announced. For your reading pleasure, here are the winners!

The Newbery Award, for excellence in literature, was awarded to Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! by Laura Amy Schlitz. This is a collection of monologues or poems set in a medieval village. A quick read with bright illustrations, it's suitable for third to seventh graders.

Honor titles were awarded to: Elijah of Buxton, The Wednesday Wars, and Feathers.

The Caldecott Award, for excellence in illustration, was awarded to The Invention of Hugo Cabret. A huge tome, this story mixes illustrations and words to excellent effect. It takes place in Paris and tells the story of a clock worker boy and a fascinating puzzle.

Honor awards were given to: Henry's Freedom Box, First the Egg, The Wall, and Knuffle Bunny Too.

The Printz Award, for excellence in young adult literature, was awarded to White Darkness. White Darkness takes a young girl on an Antarctic journey with her uncle who dreams of discovering the center of the earth.

Honor awards were given to: Dreamquake, One Whole and Perfect Day, Repossessed, and Your Own Sylvia.

Here are the results from other awards announced at the press conference.

The Sibert informational Award was given to The Wall. Honor Awards were given to The Lightship, and Nic BIshop's Spiders.

The Geisel Award for excellence in beginning readers was given to There Is a Bird on My Head. Honor titles were: First the Egg, Hello Bumblebee Bat, Jazz Baby, and Vulture View.

For fun, the Carnegie Medal for children's movies was given to Jump In Freestyle Edition.
