There's still time for second chances
If you missed the recent town art show at the Darien Arts Center, here's a second chance! Maybe you attended the show at the Weatherstone Studio and wish to revisit this talent on display. Whatever the reason, we happily continue the tradition of exhibiting the works of the winning artists here in the Library's Main Reading Room.

Be sure to stop by and admire the Art on View. This exhibit will continue through July 17th.

Adult Summer Reading Begins Today!

The heat of the last several days is a persuasive reminder that summer is upon us and that's a cue for most of us to slow down and relax. It's time to engage in summer reading - a necessary indulgence if you ask me. Finding it hard to break from the ingrained desire to multi-task? How about reading while you work on that tan, or listening to an audio book on the drive up to the Cape? How about reading to win prizes? Register at the front desk for our first ever Adult Summer Reading Program.

Is it a rebus?
If this were a rebus picture puzzle, one might guess Darien Library.

Actually, these are a couple of the stunning works of art on exhibit right now in the Main Reading Room. Our Art on View through July 17th features the winners of the 2006 Darien Art Show.
On the left is "Evening Snow - Darien" (the winner of Best in Show), a watercolor by Stan Pastore. Lisa Thoren's mixed media piece "Stacked" is on the right.
Given the variety of media and the number of different artists, one can't help but be impressed with how pleasing this exhibit is as a whole. Please drop by and see for yourself.

The first meeting is Wednesday, June 21 from 6 to 7 p.m. The chosen book is “The Boy Who Saved Baseball” by John H. Ritter. Can an average boy, an ornery old baseball star, and one last game save Tom’s small California town from destruction by a developer?
Upcoming Nutmeg Book Groups will occur on Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. Registration for each meeting will begin on the first of each month.

Summertime...and the reading is easy
...and breezy. Summer reading is one of the most luxurious pleasures I know.
Relax! Indulge!

We launch our very first Adult Summer Reading Program next Monday, June 19th.
Humorous books are our focus this summer. "Humor Me!" is our theme and we're offering prizes! Submit a Grand Prize Entry Form for every book read. Special prizes will be awarded to participants who read five books (audio books included). Don't forget to register at the front desk!
Our Grand Prizes will be drawn from all entry forms at our Grand Finale, "The Last Laugh" on Wednesday, August 23rd from 7 - 8:30 p.m. and we've got some pretty special prizes! A few of us (bloggers all) braved the crowds at Book Expo in Washington D.C. last month...

...and we returned with some autographed and advance copies of popular books including Nelson DeMille's newest, a nuclear terror thriller, "Wild Fire," scheduled for November release, and one from Tommy Chong (yes, of the notorious Cheech and Chong). He's written a memoir, "The I Chong: Meditations from the Joint," and it's due to be released in August. We also have a signed advance sample from My Father, My President: a Personal Account of the Life of George H. W. Bush, written by his daughter, Doro Bush Koch. Not due to be published until October, this offers a glimpse of what to expect.

And speaking of glimpses, check out our display case for a glimpse of more prizes!
