Library Book Sale:
The Darien Library will hold its Winter Book Sale from Saturday, January 13 through Wednesday, January 17, 2007. Shoppers will find recent bestsellers, fiction and detective mystery titles, cookbooks, travel books, and biographies, as well as children’s books.
On Saturday and Sunday, hard and soft-covered books are $1.00 each or 3 for $2.00. Paperback books are $.25 each or 5 for $1.00. Audiobooks, CDs, and videos are $1.00 each and DVDs are $5.00 each.
On Monday, January 15, all items will be half price. Tuesday, all items will be $1.00 a bag, and the sale will end on Wednesday with “Fill-a-Bag for Free Day.”
Sales items are either donations or Library materials withdrawn from the collection. Because of space constraints, the Library must now withdraw one item for every new one added. Proceeds from the book sale are used to purchase new titles in all formats including books, DVDs, CDs, books on CD, and CD-ROMs.
The sale is open during the Library’s regular hours: Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Display Case:
President Gerald Ford, Red Buttons, Wendy Wasserstein, Mike Douglas, Coretta Scott King, Dana Reeve...we said farewell to them and many others in 2006. The Darien Library's display case pays tribute to those who shaped our political, cultural, and historical landscapes, whose legacies will stay with us for generations to come.
Annual Campaign:
Darien Library asks, “Are You the Missing Piece?”
The Friends of the Library Annual Campaign has begun and the Darien Library is eager to meet its goal of $450,000.00. Contribution totals will be recorded on the heron puzzle in the lobby of the Library. So far, over $260,000 has been donated, resulting in the placement of 13 puzzle pieces on the heron.
The money raised will be used to purchase all the books, movies, and music for the Library in the upcoming year. All programs and services are also funded entirely by the Annual Campaign.
Last year, Darien Library welcomed 432,267 visitors and circulated more than 750,000 items.

Children’s Room:
“Nutmeg @ Nite”:
“Nutmeg @ Nite” trivia contest will take place at the Darien Library on Wednesday, January 24 and Thursday, January 25 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Students in grades 3 to 6 who have read at least six of this year’s Intermediate Nutmeg titles are invited to register for one of the evenings to test their Nutmeg knowledge. Spectators ages 6 and up are welcome to cheer for their siblings. Parents and caregivers of participants are to remain in the Library during the program.
“Nutmeg @ Nite” celebrates the Nutmeg Award, chosen by Connecticut’s youths. The Intermediate and Teen Awards encourage children in grades 4 to 8 to read quality literature and to choose their favorite from lists of 10 nominated titles chosen each year by Connecticut librarians, school media specialists, and teachers.
This event is brought to you by the Darien Library and supported by Hindley School, Holmes School, Ox Ridge School, Royle School, and Tokeneke School. Contact the Darien Library Children’s Room at 655-1234 x117 to register by Friday, January 19. Visit the Library’s website at www.darienlibrary.org for more information.
