This Week at the Library 5/10/07 to 5/17/07
Art Exhibit:
Darien artist Lori Glavin will exhibit new work at Darien Library from May 1 through June 10. A reception with the artist will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, May 11.
Ms. Glavin will exhibit oil paintings, collograph prints, and collages, all made using recycled polystyrene. In this exhibit, entitled “Minute by Minute,” the artist’s work explores time – how our days and hours and minutes are divided into equal segments that give structure to our lives. In some work, each minute is represented and in other pieces, the focus is on the emotions of a specific hour or period of day.
About her choice of materials, Ms. Glavin says, “I reuse polystyrene packaging from the supermarket in my collages because it relates to my domestic life and also symbolizes waste in our lives. The daily cycle of shopping, preparing, and cleaning up is an integral part of my day. I like finding a second use for ordinary materials that most people view as garbage.”
Ms. Glavin’s use of polystyrene began as an experiment in which she got 1,440 equal-sized pieces, each representing one minute, and created a collage about a day in her life. Soon, the three-dimensional collages became printing plates, used on both paper and canvas.
Ms. Glavin has been involved in the visual arts for over 25 years. After earning her BFI from Syracuse University’s School of Visual and Performing Arts, she worked in New York as a graphic designer and art director. She was the owner of her own design firm and held creative positions at Conde Nast’s HG and The New York Times’ McCall’s magazine.
Ms. Glavin is an artist member of the Silvermine Guild of Artists in New Canaan and ART/PLACE, a cooperative gallery in Southport, CT. She exhibits regularly in galleries in Connecticut and Maine.
