Right here, it will hereby be proclaimed

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

This important awareness campaign begins a few days early in Darien and it'll start this Thursday, the 27th at 11 a.m. right here at the Library when First Selectwoman Evonne Klein will read the proclamation.

As a result of the efforts of the Darien Domestic Violence Task Force, the powerful Silent Witness exhibit will be on display at the Library this Thursday and Friday, and at Town Hall next Monday and Tuesday.

The Connecticut Silent Witness Exhibit is a traveling tribute to women in Connecticut who were murdered as a result of domestic violence. Featuring 13 silhouettes, the exhibit includes the names, ages, and histories of 11 women who were murdered in 1996 by their husbands, former husbands, or partners. The 12th figure represents the women whose deaths were not recognized as being caused by domestic violence, and the 13th figure represents women whose lives continue to be at risk unless appropriate assistance and intervention is made available.
The Library will open this Friday evening, the 28th, from 7 - 8 p.m. for a special viewing of this exhibit.
Then, at 8 p.m., we'll be showing the film Waitress downstairs in the Program Room. This is a wonderful story about finding hope within hopelessness. It's a real crowd-pleaser of a film and we are very pleased to bring this film to town as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT AT DARIEN LIBRARY
Samir Safwat will exhibit his photographs in the Main Reading Room at Darien Library through October 29. Born in California and raised in Sweden and Egypt, Safwat’s interest in photography began during his childhood and was explored throughout his youth. He returned to the United States to attend college, and after college he apprenticed with a number of photographers in New York City, most notably James Moore (Harper’s Bazaar, New York Times Magazine).
Safwat’s first published photograph (in 1965) was a cover shot of John Tchicai, a well-known saxophonist, for the jazz magazine DownBeat. His career has included working as a freelance photographer for Mademoiselle Magazine as well as for the fashion department at The New York Times.
In the past few years, he has become involved in digital photography, enjoying the full control of the photographic process from exposure to the final print.
This exhibit at Darien Library will be a display of the work that Safwat does in his spare time: photographing subjects of personal interest.

Madeleine Mueller Exhibits at Darien Library:
“Local Landscapes, Seascapes, and More,” paintings by Darien artist Madeleine Mueller, is currently on view at Darien Library through September 24.
Mueller’s alla prima style, although realistic, is somewhat impressionistic. The subjects range from the tranquility of Long Island Sound, as viewed from Darien, to the drama of Maine’s rugged coastline. Her love of the New England coastline is evident in the plein air paintings she exhibits throughout Fairfield County.
Mueller has exhibited at the Soundwaters Center and the Landmark Building in Stamford, Babel in New Canaan, the Bistro du Soleil in Norwalk, and Sterling Glen in Darien. Her work has also been shown in the Spectrum Art Show, Post 53’s annual fundraiser, and the Junior League’s show at the Burr Homestead in Fairfield. She participates in the “Artists on Location” auctions in Garrison, New York, and has exhibited her work in art galleries in Darien and Westport.
Mueller, a member of the Rowayton Center, has studied with John Squadra, Charles Sovek, Pamela Du Long Williams, Frank Bruckmann, and Charles Ray.
