Art Exhibit:

Photographer June Steffensen Hagen will exhibit “The Astoria Elevated Line” in the Main Reading Room at Darien Library through February 15. Hagen, when discussing this collection of photographs, explains that she simplified her subject matter down to a single segment of the vast New York City subway system: the elevated trains that run from Manhattan through Queensboro Plaza to Astoria, Queens (where she resides). She states that her rules are to 1) simplify; 2) pay attention; and 3) celebrate. “By paying photographic attention to riders and workers, stark structures, and nuanced views, I intend to celebrate a mundane, yet often beautiful part of urban life,” Hagen said, adding, “The question remains, of course, do you see what I see?”

Hagen, a retired English professor, is a member of The Catskill Art Society, The International Center of Photography, and The Manhattan Miniature Camera Club. She has been exhibiting her work since the mid-1990s and her photographs have been on display at Cornell-Weill Medical Library, the Manhattan Borough President’s Office, and the Empire State Building Lobby Gallery, as well as other prominent locations.
