COMING NEXT WEEK
Books (publication date May 20):
Blood Trail by C. J. Box
The Front by Patricia Cornwell
Odd Hours by Dean Koontz
Snuff by Chuck Palahniuk
Spring Book Discussion Concludes:
The Ghost by Robert Harris will be the subject of Darien Library’s book discussion series “The Political Life in the Modern Novel” on Sunday, May 18 at 2:30 p.m. This is the fourth and final book of the discussion series, which features novels that explore the ways in which the political life affects the family and questions the compromises made by those who pursue politics. Jordon Pecile, Professor Emeritus at the United States Coast Guard Academy, is the discussion leader.
The Ghost is a suspense-thriller – the latest book from this bestselling author. Set in winter on Martha’s Vineyard, it is the story of a former British prime minister (clearly modeled on Tony Blair) and the writing (and ghostwriting) of his memoir.
“Harris nicely leavens his cynical tale with gallows humor, and even readers who anticipate the plot’s final twist will admire the author’s artistry in creating an intelligent page-turner that tackles serious issues.” – Publishers Weekly
“Harris has managed to write a superior entertainment that is also an angry portrait of today’s political reality.” – Patrick Anderson, The Washington Post
Harris is the No. 1 bestselling author of Fatherland, Enigma, Archangel, Pompeii, and Imperium.
The Library has copies of the books available for patrons to borrow, but prior reading of the book is not necessary to attend the discussion.
The book discussion series is funded by contributions to the Darien Library’s Annual Campaign and cosponsored by the Darien Community Association Book Group, the Senior Men’s Association, and the American Association of Woman, Stamford-Darien branch.
Bestselling Author Launches Book Tour at the Library:
Bestselling author and Darien resident Bob Spitz will be at Darien Library on Sunday, May 18 at 5:30 p.m. to talk about his new book, The Saucier’s Apprentice: One Long Strange Trip through the Great Cooking Schools of Europe. Spitz, best known for his books The Beatles: The Biography and Dylan: A Biography, gets autobiographical with this culinary memoir, which was published this week. Darien Library is the first stop on the author’s book tour.
Spitz is honest and candid about his reasons for pursuing his world-class cooking dream and about his experiences. He admits that he sought salvation in European cooking schools after a series of life-altering events: he turned 50, finished an eight-year book project and 14-year marriage that left him nearly destitute, and had his heart stolen and broken on the rebound.
The well-known author’s articles appear regularly in almost every important magazine and newspaper, and in his memoir, his experience and skill are apparent. He is expert at providing the reader with apt, lush, and luscious descriptions of meals and countryside.
“The Saucier’s Apprentice” is filled with wonderful stories, cooking instructions, and recipes. Whether he’s writing about cooking for friends in his Darien home or an “incredible, culinary epiphany” in Paris, Spitz is sometimes sentimental, sometimes cranky, sometimes self-deprecating, sometimes hilarious, and always entertaining.
A reception and book signing will follow the presentation. Books will be available for purchase.

Spring Book Discussion Series:
All the King’s Men by Robert Penn Warren will be the subject of Darien Library’s book discussion series “The Political Life in the Modern Novel” on Sunday, April 6 at 2:30 p.m. This is the second book of the discussion series, which features novels that explore the ways in which the political life affects the family and questions the compromises made by those who pursue politics. Jordon Pecile, Professor Emeritus at the United States Coast Guard Academy, is the discussion leader.
Considered by many to still be as relevant as it was when it was written more than 60 years ago, and “the definitive novel about American politics,” All the King’s Men is the story of the rise and fall of a southern politician. Idealism falling to corruption, dirty politics, philosophical conflict, loyalty and hunger for power; it’s a fictionalized account of Louisiana Governor Huey Long and a classic in American literature.
The first U.S. Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry, Robert Penn Warren (1905-1989) won three Pulitzer Prizes, including one in 1947 for All the King’s Men.
“If the game of naming the Great American Novel is still being played anywhere, Warren’s All the King’s Men would easily make the final rounds.” – The Washington Post – This text refers to the original 1946 edition.
“A fully restored American political classic…. Now we can read it as it was written.” – Chicago Tribune – This text refers to the present, reconstituted edition, which includes the cuts and alterations made by the original editors.
The Library has copies of the books available for patrons to borrow, but prior reading of the book is not necessary to attend the discussion.

Michael Gates Gill, author of How Starbucks Saved My Life: A Son of Privilege Learns to Live Like Everyone Else, will be the featured speaker at the Library on Thursday, February 28th at 7 p.m.
Michael Gates Gill was the son of wealth and privilege. At the age of 63, he lost it all – his job, his family, his home, and his health. Dejected and desperate, he accepted an entry level job at a local Starbucks and embarked on a journey that reached across race, class, and age to transform his life. In the book, an instant bestseller, Gill shares what he’s learned about hard work, respect, camaraderie, and humanity with thoughtfulness, humor, honesty, and dignity.
Copies of the book will be available for purchase. A book signing will follow the presentation and there will be a drawing for prizes. Refreshments will be served (coffee courtesy of Darien Starbucks).

Art Exhibit:
Photographer June Steffensen Hagen will exhibit “The Astoria Elevated Line” in the Main Reading Room at Darien Library through February 15th. Hagen, when discussing this collection of photographs, explains that she simplified her subject matter down to a single segment of the vast New York City subway system: the elevated trains that run from Manhattan through Queensboro Plaza to Astoria, Queens (where she resides). She states that her rules are to 1) simplify; 2) pay attention; and 3) celebrate. “By paying photographic attention to riders and workers, stark structures, and nuanced views, I intend to celebrate a mundane, yet often beautiful part of urban life,” Hagen said, adding, “The question remains, of course, do you see what I see?”
Hagen, a retired English professor, is a member of The Catskill Art Society, The International Center of Photography, and The Manhattan Miniature Camera Club. She has been exhibiting her work since the mid-1990s and her photographs have been on display at Cornell-Weill Medical Library, the Manhattan Borough President’s Office, and the Empire State Building Lobby Gallery, as well as other prominent locations.

Art Exhibit:
Photographer June Steffensen Hagen will exhibit “The Astoria Elevated Line” in the Main Reading Room at Darien Library through February 15.

Darien Library to Unveil New Logo at Annual Meeting:
Darien Library is creating a new look inside and out, as it works on construction of the New Darien Library. The Library’s new logo will be unveiled at the Annual Meeting of Friends of the Library on Sunday, October 28 at 5:30 p.m. Steff Geissbuhler, one of the nation’s most celebrated designers of integrated brand and corporate identity programs, will be the featured speaker. Preceding his presentation, election of officers and new trustee nominations for the year 2007/2008 will take place. David Genovese, Rich van den Broek, and Prescott Romeyn are nominated as new trustees. There will be a report from Kim Huffard, President of the Board of Trustees, and Library Director Louise Berry. David Campbell, head of the New Darien Library Building Committee, will also give a brief presentation. With pictures and illustrations, he will discuss the progress of the new construction and provide some insight into what to expect during the next 15 months of the project.
The featured speaker, Steff Geissbuhler, a founding partner in C&G Partners of New York, will be joined by Leslie Hayden Sherr, a marketing and communications specialist also with C&G Partners. They have been working with the Library for the past year to develop a new brand identity to go along with the new building and new and future library services. They will be discussing C&G Partners’ work to develop an updated identity for Darien Library and will unveil the new logo. Geissbuhler is considered an “identity design master” and is a leader in his field. He is responsible for the design of many memorable and defining corporate-identity programs. His familiar logotypes include the NBC peacock as well as the symbols for National Public Radio, CARE International, IBM, and the New York Public Library, to name a few. Geissbuhler considers mission, appropriateness, and meaningfulness when approaching a project. He believes that “actual symbols mean more today than abstractions. My NBC peacock still works today because people relate to something they can understand right away.”
A reception will follow the meeting. Wine and cheese will be served.

Madeleine Mueller Exhibits at Darien Library:
“Local Landscapes, Seascapes, and More,” paintings by Darien artist Madeleine Mueller, is currently on view at Darien Library through September 24.
Mueller’s alla prima style, although realistic, is somewhat impressionistic. The subjects range from the tranquility of Long Island Sound, as viewed from Darien, to the drama of Maine’s rugged coastline.
