The spotlight's on us! We'll be showing the independent film "Fog Warning" at 7:30 p.m. this Friday, May 9th. Written and directed by local resident Chris Ward, Chris will be here that night for this special screening and will stay after the movie to answer questions. Some members of the cast and crew will be here as well, and it's doubly exciting for us because the Library is featured in the film!
Chris stopped by the library today to chat with me and Janet and we've got that interview available right here as a podcast.
Come by the Library Friday night if you're up for some twists and turns, suspense and thrills, and the very real possibility of being (shudder, shudder) "creeped out."

Roll out the red carpet for us next Friday, May 9th! We're on the big screen and we'll be showing it on our screen! Show time is at 7:30 p.m.

The film, written and directed by local television and film writer Christopher Ward, is a suspense-thriller...a horror movie...with a vampire premise...and we are in it! What better place is there to do research???? Chris said that he had our Library in mind when he wrote the scene. The filming took place here last July. Click here to read more about it.

Susan Howe
Susan Howe is the author of several books of poems and two volumes of criticisms. For more than 30 years, she has written with insight of the lives of wayward pilgrims and spiritual wilderness, and she has received two American Book Awards from the Before Columbus Foundation.
She is a Professor of English at the State University of New York at Buffalo. In 2000, she was elected a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets.
A reception will follow the reading. All are welcome.

Meet the Author Series: John Feinstein at the Library:
In a rare personal appearance, sportswriter and commentator John Feinstein will be at Darien Library on Sunday, May 4 at 5:30 p.m. to talk about his book, Living on the Black: Two Pitchers, Two Teams, One Season to Remember. The program, part of the Library’s “Meet the Author” series, will be the first public speaking engagement for Feinstein about his newly published book.
The book, an insider’s look at the game of baseball, is about two veteran New York pitchers, Tom Glavine of the Mets (now of the Atlanta Braves) and Mike Mussina of the Yankees, and their 2007 seasons. “Living on the Black” is a behind-the-scenes look, from a masterful storyteller, at the high stakes, tension, and human drama that make baseball America’s favorite pastime.
John Feinstein is a commentator on NPR’s “Morning Edition,” a regular on ESPN’s “The Sports Reporters,” an essayist for CBS Sports, and known for his color commentary for the United States Naval Academy football games. His writing career includes years on the staff at The Washington Post as well as writing for Sports Illustrated, The National Sports Daily, Inside Sports, Golf, Tennis Magazine, and Basketball America.
Copies of “Living on the Black” will be available for purchase. A book signing and reception will follow the presentation. Refreshments will be served.
The “Meet the Author” series is funded solely by contributions made to the Annual Campaign.

Poet’s Voice, yearly readings in Fairfield County libraries by outstanding poets, will be held at Darien Library on Sunday, May 4 at 3 p.m. Susan Howe will be the guest poet. A reception will follow the reading.

Rumpelstiltskin’s my cat and he’s lounging on a snuggle. What’s a snuggle? A snuggle is a knit, crochet, or sewn “blankie” put in the cages of animals in shelters. It makes them feel better and can even help them get adopted.

This film is based on the true story of Charlie Wilson, an alcoholic womanizer and Texas congressman who persuaded the CIA to train and arm resistance fighters in Afghanistan to fend off the Soviet Union. This effort was a success but the unintended result was an emboldened and empowered Taliban that still impacts the world to this day.
Darien High School Student Art Show:
April 7 through May 12. The artwork of DHS senior advanced art students will be on display. The students specialize in drawing and painting, silk screen printmaking, photography, and the development of sculptural and functional forms in clay. There will be an artists’ reception on Friday, May 2, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Friday Film Series:
The 2008 Friday Film Series began on Friday, February 8 and runs through April 25. Films are shown in the Program Room. Films begin at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

An Online Health Information Workshop will be offered on Friday, April 25, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in the Darien Technology Foundation Center at the Darien Library. The Darien Library will offer “Creative Movement with Miss Mary” programs for walkers up to 2 ½ years, and 2½ to four-year-olds.
Join Mary Squicciarino for songs, sing-alongs, and interactive movement with instruments and props on Fridays, May 2, 9, and 16. The program for walkers up to 2 ½ years will be from 9:45 to 10:15 a.m., and the 2 ½ to four-year-olds’ program will be from 10:45 to 11:15 a.m. Sign-up begins Friday, April 11.

The Darien Library will offer “Baby Boogie,” a program for infants ages 8 to 11 months, and “Global Tots” for two to four year olds.
Join dancer Roberta Halperin for movement, dance, and stretches for children and caregivers to share together. “Baby Boogie” occurs on Tuesday, April 15 at 10 a.m. “Global Tots” occurs Tuesday, April 15 at 11 a.m. and Wednesday, April 16 at 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. All classes are 45 minutes in length. Play Lingo – Library Bingo:
The Darien Library is pleased to offer “Play LINGO” (Library Bingo) for grades 1 to 5 on Thursday, April 17 at 3 p.m. Register in the Children’s Room.
Participate in a quick bingo lesson and then play traditional bingo. Book-based bingo will also take place…try to get pieces into the shape of an N for Narnia! No prior bingo experience or advanced reading is necessary. Prizes will be awarded.

Snuggle Knit-a-thon:
Knitters of all ages are invited to Darien Library’s “Snuggle Knit-a-thon” on Friday, April 25 from 3 to 5 p.m. Register in the Children’s Room.
Snuggles are security blankets for shelter animals. The Library will donate the finished Snuggles to Connecticut animal shelters for distribution to homeless cats and dogs.
Participants will need size 8 US or size 11 US needles (available from most craft stores). The Library will provide yarn, although participants are encouraged to use their own leftover acrylic yarns to create their Snuggles. Wool and wool blends are not accepted for shelter use.
Knitters who are not able to make the April 25th Knit-a-thon may knit Snuggles at home, and return them to the Darien Library Children’s Room by June 1.

Duct Tape Mania:

On Monday, March 31, Dr. Michael Parry, director of Infectious Disease and Microbiology at Stamford Hospital, delivered an informative presentation on MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) in the Library's Program Room. This presentation was co-sponsored by Darien Library and Stamford Hospital, and is part of the Healthy Choices Program, a National Library of Medicine-supported initiative designed to bring authoritative, high-quality health information to the general public. The artwork to be on display represents the works of senior students at the high school -- upper-level advanced art students, now in their final semester. These visually talented individuals are now enrolled in the Honors Art course, Advanced Art, Advanced Photography, and Advanced Ceramics. They specialize in drawing and painting, silk screen printmaking, photography, and the development of sculptural and functional forms in clay. Each of these students has responded to a variety of art forms that are inherent in the high school art curriculum.
The seniors, through their four years at DHS, have been developing their own individual voices. This show will be a format in which their individual artistic voices will finally have a public forum outside of Darien High School.
