Gardening on the Web

I love this time of year. Seeing the early spring flowers--daffodils, crocuses, narcissi--and hearing the birds in the morning fill me with energy and a desire to roll up my sleeves and get to work in my garden (a small corner of which is pictured above). My hours for gardening, however, are few, so I need to make the most of my available time. Luckily, as with so many topics these days, I can always turn to the internet for expert gardening advice. There are literally hundreds of gardening-related web sites loaded with practical, easy-to-follow information. Here are just a few of my favorites:
- Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens - We are so fortunate to have this great resource right next door in Stamford! The web site provides a long list of educational opportunities for budding (no pun intended!) gardeners.
- Brooklyn Botanic Garden - BBG's site includes a Gardening Section with information on wildflower gardening, garden design, and an online Ask the Expert option for those tough gardening questions.
- Connecticut Cooperative Extension System - A good source for regional gardening information, this site provides a Plant Finder to help you select trees, shrubs, and vines that are suited to our local climate.
- National Arboretum - The Gardening Page is a treasure trove of gardening information, including a gardening Q&A with tips and strategies for handling common pests and making decisions about what to grow where in your garden.
- New York Botanical Garden - Don't have time for a trip to the Bronx? No problem. The NYBG's Home Gardening Online section is a great resouce for us amateurs. Registration is required, but it's free.
Happy Gardening!

Darien Library "On the Road Again"

It's spring, and it's time once again for the annual Computers in Libraries Conference. This year, the conference was held in Crystal City, Virginia, right outside Washington, D.C. Despite highly un-springlike weather—I drove down in a blinding wind and rain storm—I enjoyed the conference and learned a lot. From “mash-ups” to “vodcasts,” the conference touched on just about every technological development in and around the library world.
Attendance at conferences such as this one give Darien Library staffers the opportunity to learn new ways to enhance your library experience. Over the next several months, we will be re-establishing virtual network drives for our patrons, and exploring ways to make our online catalog and library website more interactive and more responsive to your needs. Stay tuned.
