The Chicken or the Egg in Teen Lit.

opal.jpg sloppy.jpg

Not since Oprah's Book Club and the Da Vinci Code's court battle have we seen such a furor in the book world. Harvard student and author Kaavya Viswanathan's new book How Opal Mehta Got Kissed, Got Wild, and Got a Life may bear similarities to a previous work by Megan McCafferty, Sloppy Firsts.

I've only read McCafferty's book, so it's up to our patrons to make the call. Read both and decide for yourselves. Both are coming of age novels starring young women of personality and perseverance. While they are in the adult room in the Library, the audience is high school on up. A little light reading for the summer, anyone?

Follow-up on my original post is that Little Brown & Co., Viswanathan's publisher, has decided to pull copies of the book from shelves. The New York Times has an article on the subject here.

Today's pick - Flyte

flyte.jpg
So... I'm only 25 pages in, but my pick of today is Flyte by Angie Sage. It's the second book in her 7 book series about Septimus Heap, a seventh son of a seventh son slated to be a superior wizard. It's cozily chunky, and for fantasy lovers, will be a quick 500 page read. No, seriously, Septimus and Jenna's return to print should be cause for rejoicing for all magical readers. And if you haven't read Magyk, the first book in the series, do so with all haste. Cheers!
