To Be Or Not to Be... YA

What do we mean when we say 'young adult?' Here in the Library, we have a young adult section with books best suited for grades 6 to 12, but recent studies say that young adult-hood may reach as high as 30 years of age before we 'mature' (ahem!) into full adulthood.
Now author Markus Zusak has reopened the question of young adult literature with his provocative title The Book Thief. Using the Grim Reaper as his narrative, Zusak tells the grim story of one girl's life in Nazi Germany and the her family's attempt to hide a Jewish man from persecution. As usual with Zusak, it's never a simple story, and history, sardonic commentary, and flowing descriptions set his book apart and above from the average World War II story. I highly recommend it (and it's on the Darien High Summer Reading List).
