Middlesex Summer Reading List
Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions about the Middlesex Summer Reading List:
Q: What do I have to do for summer reading if I'm going into (6/7/8th) grade?
A: You need to read 3 approved books, unless you're going into 8th grade accelerated English, in which case it's 4 books.
Q: Where are the books from the Middlesex list located at the Darien Library?
A: On a cart, just inside the door to the right. They have an aqua dot on the spine. They circulate for two weeks only with no renewals.
Q: What books am I allowed to read?
A: Books from the Middlesex Summer Reading List or books with written approval from a librarian or teacher.
Q: So, can I read anything I want - I just need to get a permission form?
A: Close, but not quite. Children's Librarians at the Darien Library will give permission forms for books (not on the Middlesex list) that are notable books, with positive reviews in professional journals. While some popular books have excellent literary merit, others do not. In doubt? Call or visit the Library (Permission slips will be given out in person; verbal phone permission doesn't count :( Sorry).
Q: Okay, I've read my 3 books. Now what?
A: Well, there is more information about what you should do for each book you read on the Middlesex website. You can download forms there.
Q: What if I have more questions?
A: You should call the school office at 655-2518. Since this list is published by the school, the final answer about any lingering questions should be answered by Middlesex Middle School personnel. This is the correct information as far as we know, but be sure to double check with the school!
Have a great summer!

Online Parenting 101
Not sure if I have any definite opinions (yet) about this article in Wired, but I thought it was a good place for parents to start thinking about parenting and responsibility in an electronic age. So, check it out. Teens, you should read it too -but warning, it might cause you to converse with your parents!
