The model was so popular at the Art Auction on Saturday that I got several offers to bid on it.

Live from the Library
It's Friday the 13th and a very unfortunate event is taking place, even as I write, in the Darien Library. So Long, Snicket contestants are doing the spelling contest RIGHT NOW.
UPDATE: The orange team is winning with 34 points. Contestants are now doing the Vile Vocabulary contest.
8:30 pm. It's over. The orange team won.

Are you the missing piece?
Jay Wood, the chairman of the Annual Campaign for the Darien Library, wants everyone who uses the Library to do his or her part to support our annual campaign. We need to raise $450,000 to buy the books and movies that you want to borrow this year. Help us fill in the heron puzzle by sending in your contribution today! New this year, a special thank you to our Family and above donors: a coupon worth $25.00 in overdue fines and two extra days to watch dvds.

The first visit
This post from Seth Godin really got me thinking. We know that some of our services are suffering because we are out of space. And we know that some of these problems will be solved when we move into the new library. But everyone who comes in the Darien Library, right now, for the first time, comes with a "beginner's mind", as Seth Godin puts it.... and we need to make sure that she gets what she wants, no excuses. Even if the books are piled up on the floor, or the dvd racks are hard to maneuver. If you are new to the Darien Library, did we exceed your expectations? If not, please tell us why!

Dewey Cares
We librarians are a caring bunch. We work in a profession that is rooted in helping others, and as individuals and as a staff, we are philanthropic by nature. Last year, we launched a Food for Fines program to help stock the Food Bank of Connecticut, and you donated TONS of food. We donated the revenue from our book sale to the Red Cross Hurricane Katrina effort, and sent our microfilm of the New York Times to a hurricane damaged library. This year, we are supporting the Domestic Violence Crisis Center. We are accepting donations of children's and family DVDs and videotapes for the shelters, and we are sponsoring a knit-athon to make caps and scarves for children in the shelters. And all those purple ribbons all over town? Our staff did that, too. Special kudos to Emily, Barbara and Caitlin for their leadership on these projects. And if you would like to donate videos or knit for the shelters, just click the Events blog for details.
