An Experience
I am a big fan of James Gilmore, having heard him speak at a conference last year. His book, The Experience Economy, has some very thought-provoking ideas, which I intend to discuss in the coming weeks. His basic concept is that people enjoy events more when they become compelling or engaging experiences. Well, last weekend was An Experience for the Darien Library. On Friday night, we reinstituted a tradition of having the incoming Board of Trustees and the outgoing Board of Trustees meet for a dinner. What was different this year was that a bowling party followed the dinner. Talk about team building!
This was all in preparation for the Library's Annual Meeting on Sunday. Library staff members Barbara Thomas and Janet Davis did our first ever podcast interview of the annual meeting speaker, Bob Spitz on Friday afternoon... an excellent job. (We are worried about NPR stealing them away.) Bob Spitz was so pleased that he invited them to interview him again, during his speech on Sunday. And with the speeches thanking retiring trustees, especially George Wyper, our outgoing President, I heard at least one person describe it as a "lovefest". Jim Gilmore might call it An Experience.

Live from the Library
It's Friday the 13th and a very unfortunate event is taking place, even as I write, in the Darien Library. So Long, Snicket contestants are doing the spelling contest RIGHT NOW.
UPDATE: The orange team is winning with 34 points. Contestants are now doing the Vile Vocabulary contest.
8:30 pm. It's over. The orange team won.

Sneak Preview
Last week, we had a staff meeting to plan for the fall lineup of programs, and I thought that you might like a sneak preview of some of the upcoming events at the Library. We will, of course, be describing these events with more detail in the forthcoming months....including special email announcements for our computer savvy customers, and back by popular demand, separate flyers for individual events for our Friends who love to get things in their (snail) mail box.
So here's the lineup: Beatles author Bob Spitz will be the featured speaker at the library's annual meeting on Sunday October 29; Acabella will perform at our annual holiday concert on Sunday, December 3; the Fall Book Discussion series with Jordon Pecile begins on Sunday, September 17, and the Foreign Film series begins on Friday October 20. A very special program for children based on the Lemony Snicket books will take place on.... when else, but Friday the 13th of October. I personally will NOT miss this event. We also have a few Capital Campaign events in the works for the fall... so save these dates as well: Quiet Places, Gathering Spaces art auction on October 14 and a special event for children and families on November 19. We expect a busy fall.... see you in the Library!

SOX!
No, not the Red Sox, not even the White Sox, but the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX). If you serve on a nonprofit board, then this program should interest you. Darien Library is sponsoring, with the Volunteer Center and the Community Fund of Darien, an evening program on Corporate Governance for Nonprofits, on September 14. At a meeting in June, Maurice Segall from the ProBono Partnership told agency directors that there are three policies that all nonprofits should have as a result of SOX. Does your nonprofit have them? And even more thought-provoking was the message that as a board member for a nonprofit, you can be held personally liable if the nonprofit does not pay its withholding taxes. So come on down to the Library on Thursday, September 14, at 7:30 pm and learn about best practices for nonprofits boards. And the three policies are:
1. conflict of interest 2. whistleblower 3. destruction of documents
