Writer's Workshop

Thursday, June 18th at 7 p.m.

Come join The Writer's Workshop, a monthly class for writers of any genre.  A constructive atmosphere greets aspiring writers as they learn and understand a reader's perspective of their work.  While many in the group have dreams to publish, that is not a requirement.  Presently we have fiction, memoir, mystery and thriller, short story, personal essay, and poetry writers.  Let's put pen to paper and get writing!

Presented by Laura Cavers, who recently received an MFA in Creative Writing from Manhattanville College. At Manhattanville, Laura was assistant editor to the college's award-winning literary magazine, Inkwell.  She is currently working on her first novel, Bellwethers.

Friday Night Feature - 'Caddyshack'

At an exclusive country club for WASPish snobs, an ambitious young caddy (Michael O'Keefe) from an overpopulated home eagerly pursues a caddy scholarship in hopes of attending college and, in turn, avoiding a job at the lumber yard. In order to succeed, he must first win the favor of the elitist Judge Smails (Ted Knight), then the caddy golf tournament which the good judge sponsors. Of course, there are love interests as well -- one good, one naughty -- not to mention several foes he must vanquish along the way.

Passport Days

Get your passport at Darien Library! We will process and accept new and renewal applications. We will provide all the paperwork and take photos. Please bring fifteen dollars in cash or check for photos.  If you prefer, you can bring your own photographs. Specifications for passport photos can be found here.

What to Bring: Birth Certificate, Naturalization Certificate, one color 2’’ by 2’’ photo, a valid photo identification (such as a driver’s license) with a front and back photocopy of the ID, and personal check/money order or debit/credit card for payment of the passport fee.

Minors under age 16 cannot apply for a passport by themselves.  Both parents/guardians must appear in person and provide consent, authorizing passport issuance to the minor.  If one parent/guardian is unable to appear in person, then the application must be accompanied by a signed, notarized Form DS-3053: Statement of Consent from the non-applying parent/guardian.  More information on passports for minors can be found here.

Week 4: Financial Reporting & Planning
This presentation reviews a business's key financial statements and walks the participants through the development of a comprehensive financial plan. The importance of understanding the key financial drivers of the business will be a center-piece of the discussion.

Coding for Adults: four week course

Begins Thursday, June 25th from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and will continue every Thursday after that, ending on July 16th.

Calling all moms, entrepreneurs, college students, or anyone interested in learning the basics of computer coding! We will explore programming in Python. Think of it as like a new language: in addition to learning syntax, and writing scripts, we will work on developing computational thinking—breaking down big problems into simple individual tasks. The best news? No experience is necessary! Students are required to bring a laptop for use during this class.

This class is open to Darien Residents, those employed full time in Darien, or non-residents who are contributors to the Darien Library Annual Campaign at the $300 level.
