In Search of Perfection - 2012 Spring Book Discussion Series
The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides
Tuesday, April 3 at 7 p.m.
Jeffrey Eugenides' long-awaited third novel takes place in the early 1980s. It begins at Brown University with Madeleine Hanna, dutiful English major. While studying the works of Jane Austen and George Eliot, she ponders whether the theme of the marriage plot still exists in our modern times.
The story takes us from Providence to Cape Cod and winds us through a love triangle between Madeleine, her boyfriend Leonard, and her classmate Mitchell. Eugenides is known for his hearty coming-of-age novels, and this one is no different. It also includes one of the most accurate depictions of mental illness I have encountered in a story.
