Thursday, September 11th at 3 p.m.
Senior Moments, a monthly coffee and conversation program designed specifically for seniors, will meet in our Conference Room.
Mark Albertson's talk will focus on the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir apparent to the Hapsburg Empire and, his wife, the Countess Sophie. The chronology of events which saw Austria-Hungary, Serbia, Russia, Germany, France and Britain tumble into war by August 4, 1914 will be explained. This tragicomic sequence of events never ceases to amaze me as to how these nations, with everything to lose, opted for conflict. As Lord Edward Gray, British Foreign Minister, observed, "The lamps are going out all over Europe. We will not see them lit again in our lifetime."
Mark Albertson is a historian for the Army Aviation Association of America and writer for the periodical Army Aviation magazine. He has authored several books on the history of World War I.
Save the date for our next Senior Moments program on Thursday, October 9th at 3 p.m. where we will do some line dancing for seniors.
