Character Counts - 2012 Fall Book Discussion Series
Tuesday, November 27 at 7 p.m.
Bring Up the Bodies, the sequel to Hilary Mantel's 2009 Man Booker Prize winner and New York Times bestseller, Wolf Hall delves into the heart of Tudor history with the downfall of Anne Boleyn.
Though he battled for seven years to marry her, Henry is disenchanted with Anne Boleyn. She has failed to give him a son and her sharp intelligence and audacious will alienate his old friends and the noble families of England. When the discarded Katherine dies in exile from the court, Anne stands starkly exposed, the focus of gossip and malice.
At a word from Henry, Thomas Cromwell is ready to bring her down. Over three terrifying weeks, Anne is ensnared in a web of conspiracy, while the demure Jane Seymour stands waiting her turn for the poisoned wedding ring. But Anne and her powerful family will not yield without a ferocious struggle. Hilary Mantel's Bring Up the Bodies follows the dramatic trial of the queen and her suitors for adultery and treason. To defeat the Boleyns, Cromwell must ally with his natural enemies, the papist aristocracy. What price will he pay for Anne's head?

Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, this film tells the story of two twelve-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact, and run away together into the wilderness. Friday, November 2 at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. – Peace, Love, and Misunderstanding (2012) Starring Jane Fonda, Catherine Keener, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan; Rated R; 92 minutes; Closed captioned for the hearing impaired.
For uptight Manhattan lawyer Diane, crazy means driving her teenage son Jake and daughter Zoe to Woodstock to visit their grandmother Grace. The crazy part is that the kids have never met Grace. In fact, Diane hasn’t spoken to her mother in twenty years. Grace is the epitome of the term “hippie”: she stages protests and hootenannies in the town square, smokes (and sells) a lot of dope, and howls at the moon once a month with her goddess-worshipping girlfriends. But what’s meant to be a weekend getaway turns into a summer adventure of romance, music, family secrets, and self-discovery.
"Jane Fonda’s performance is a force of nature." -- Peter Debruge, Variety
"Fonda has never looked more fabulous or provoked more laughter." -- Alison Bailes, MORE Magazine

Emma Straub, author of Laura Lamont's Life in Pictures, will be our featured speaker.
Ambitious and richly imagined, this novel begins in 1929 and follows Elsa Emerson from her childhood in Door County, Wisconsin where her family owns the Cherry County Playhouse, to the glamour and excess of Hollywood, where she is remade into movie star Laura Lamont. Exploring the power of illusion and the possibility of escape, the expectations placed upon us by others and the identities we create for ourselves, Laura Lamont’s Life in Pictures is a timeless story of a woman trying to balance career, family, and personal happiness, all while remaining true to herself.
Advance Praise for Laura Lamont's Life in Pictures
"At once iconic and specific, Emma Straub's beautifully observed first novel explores the fraught trajectory of what has become a staple of the American dream: the hunger for stardom and fame. Laura Lamont’s Life in Pictures affords an intimate, epic view of how that dream ricochets through one American life." — Jennifer Egan, author of A Visit from the Goon Squad
“Emma Straub is a magician, full of brilliance and surprise.” — Lorrie Moore
