Things I Have Read, Things I Liked

After a long dry summer, and I am not just talking about the weather, I have read some really great stuff lately.

I spent one weekend obsessing over Civil War history with two books from two very different perspectives.

"The Widow of the South" tells of a woman who, after her home is commandeered by the Union Army for a field hospital becomes the very long term care-taker of some of the soldiers who became permanent residents.

E.L. Doctrow's "The March" takes us with Sherman's Army and their March To The Sea. His voice is back to the one that made "Ragtime" a Pulitzer winner. In fact, he introduces us to the parents of the protagonist of "Ragtime" Coalhouse Walker Jr. Fun!

Speaking of Pulitzers, my pick for Non-Fiction, is J.R. Moehlringer's "Tender Bar." This book so moved me that I had to stop reading for a couple of days. This story of a fatherless boy who is raised by the denizen's of a bar in Manhassett is the best thing I have read all year. I loved it so much I ordered a copy for my Dad. Ssshhh, don't tell.

For pure fun, Jennifer Weiner's "Goodnight Nobody" is a wonderful murder mystery that takes place somewhere along The Gold Coast. Parts of this is laugh out loud funny. Will you recognize yourself or perhaps a neighbor?

Remember, it is cold and flu season. Can't get out? Call us or renew on line! We thank you for it!
