It's the middle of winter
and we are all feeling peckish and peevish. The thought that we may never see sun or feel warm again is making us less than pleasant. Perhaps it is time to take a step back and review our everyday human interactions.
What Would Jackie Do? An Inspired Guide to Distinctive Living and Talk to the Hand: The Utter Bloody Rudeness of the World Today or Six Good Reasons to Stay Home and Bolt the Door are two recent releases that have caught my eye. Lynn Truss who brought us the grammar bible of "Eats, Shoots and Leaves", takes on what she sees as the collapse of civility in our society. Citing many varied sources from the Simpsons (Bart and Lisa, not OJ) to Evelyn Waugh she rails against the "Bubble Worlds" that are brought on by cell phones and I-Pods.
The pair of Shelly Branch and Sue Callaway use the example of Jackie O to show us how to live life to the fullest with style and grace. This book is filled with timeless life lessons on living well and treating those around you with dignity and respect.
Now, no fretting! Spring will soon be here! But in the meantime let's help each other through!

"Well, what if there is no tomorrow? There wasn't one today."--Phil Connors
Our movie pick of the week is, of course, "Groundhog Day" with Bill Murray and Andie McDowell.
When weatherman, Phil Connors, played by Bill Murray goes to cover Groundhog Day for the 5th year in a row, he is overjoyed to get himself and his crew back on the road and as far away from the festivities as possible. Imagine his horror when he wakes up the next morning and he has to do it all over again. And again. And again. Will he be able to find the key to his escape and ultimately his redemption?
Here's hoping That Punxitawny Phil does not see his shadow and we can look forward to an early Spring!
Happy Weekend!

After the last couple of days "cabin fever" isn't just a concept,
but a reality. We had our time indoors forced upon us, and are overjoyed to see the sun again. Imagine if it was self imposed?
"Waydowntown" gives us the story of four friends who have staked a month's salary on who can stay inside the longest. Sound impossible? Not when you live and work in a city where virtually all the buildings are connected in some fashion! This comedy raises many questions about the way our cities are being planned and the way they can force us to live.
Just how long could you last?
Happy Weekend!

Remember your first roommate?
How odd it was to live with a person who was NOT a family member and perhaps had radically different views from you?
The Last Of Her Kind explores just that during the turbulent times of the late sixties. Georgette George, a scholarship student from upstate New York narrates the story of the turbulent relationship between herself and Ann Dooley Drayton, her privileged Connecticut roommate, who ends up embracing the radical left. Even once their lives diverge, they still manage to impact each other.
This strongly written novel is an unflinching, and unromantic glimpse into a not so distant past.

What's better than a good book on a cold winter's night?
A stack of good books of course!
Starting Friday morning at 9:00 we will be having our Winter Book Sale. As always there will be a great selection of gently used books and various media. Just what we need to make it through the next two months until Spring comes.
On Friday and Saturday, hard and soft covered books will be a dollar a piece or three for $2.00, paperbacks 25 cents a piece or 5 for $1.00, and audio books will be a dollar a piece. Sunday, all items will be half priced. On Monday, it's the fun filled fill a bag for $1.00, and Tuesday whatever is left is free.
Just think, not only are you helping yourself get through the cold and dark, you are helping us out too!
What a great deal!
Hope we see you there!

After the frivolity of the Hellidays
it is time to buckle down and get serious.
Spellbound is our movie pick of the week. Follow the diverse lives of eight contestants as they all take a shot at the 1999 National Spelling Bee. Pick a favorite and cheer them on! The hard work and dedication that these kids exhibit is truly inspirational, and a great lesson for the new year.
Happy Weekend!
