Sure it's nice outside now,

but the National Weather Service is saying that the wind will pick up and temperatures will plummet. Hmmm, what to do with La Familia this weekend?

Our pick for Movie of the Week is Secondhand Lions. Walter (Haley Joel Osmet) is 14 and even though his mother (Kyra Sedgewick) is crazy, the last place he wants to be is with his two great uncles (Michael Caine and Robert Duvall). But what they end up teaching him about living, love and the meaning of family are pricelss.

This is the perfect gather everyone around the tube movie. While the critics were less than kind to this one, we Desketeers feel that there is something here for everyone.

Stay warm and Happy Weekend!

Why you should be using your library card!

1) We Desketeers deal with over a thousand people a day, and it is hard for us to remember that you are the John J. Smith on Brooke Drive not the John P. Smith, on Elm Street.

2) Don't want "mystery items" appearing on your account? Use your card!

3) If your card is easily accessible to you, you have the ability to go online and renew your items! No more overdues! How cool is that?

4) Computer busted at home? With your library card bar code number you can come in and use one of our dandy machines!

5) Hate it when people misspell your name? Hate repeating the spelling? Use your card! Presto! No more repetition!

6) Long lines. Nobody likes a queuing up with a hundred of their neighbors to check out items. With your card we can speed things along! And we can spend more time with you chatting up books, or movies we have enjoyed or not, helping you with your holds, or just simply finding out how you are doing today.

See? It is a good idea for both sides of the Desk!

February is Black History Month

and so with an eye turned to that, the movie pick this week is "Murder on a Sunday Morning" which was the Academy Award winner of the 2001 for Best Documentary.

In a terrifying case of mistaken identity, Brenton Butler, a 15 year old African American, is charged with the murder of a woman in his neighborhood. Thought guilty, his only hope is Attorney Patrick McGuiness who uncovers the dubious interrogation and investigative practices of the Jacksonville PD.

This film provides an unflinching look the U.S. justice system.

Happy Weekend!

Valor

as defined by Merriam Webster Dictionary is, " strength of mind or spirit that enables a person to encounter danger with firmness : personal bravery." Not a word that you hear very often but it was the word that I kept thinking of as I read "The Worst Hard Time".

Author Timothy Egan was able to speak to survivors of this almost biblical plague and records their first hand accounts in this gripping history. Many here in the East did not believe the stories coming from The Great Plains until a May day in 1934 when 12 million tons of dirt fell on Chicago, and even ships 300 miles out on the Atlantic were covered in fine brown dirt.

From 1931 until the Federal Government began the replanting of the grasslands in 1939 the people who populated this region endured crop failures, "black blizzards", and the deaths of loved ones from dust pneumonia.

This is a wonderful history with gripping first hand accounts.

Ahh February

which in my mind has to be the longest feeling month of the year despite the fact that it is the shortest. It's bleak and depressing existence is only broken up by Valentine's Day, which marks the half-way point.

So, our movie pick of the week is the romantic comedy Don Juan De Marco with Marlon Brando, Johnny Depp, and Faye Dunaway. What can lessons can an aging psychiatrist played by Brando, learn from his patient, Johnny Depp, who is convinced he is the legendary lover Don Juan?

So, grab some popcorn, hot chocolate, and that toasty blanket and sink into that sofa because nothing can make time pass like a good movie.

Happy Weekend!
