Look out Everyone! He’s at it again!
That’s right! Former Desketeer Blaine will be making another appearance on the small screen on Law and Order at 10:00 tonight on NBC. Blaine appeared earlier this year on 30 Rock and if you missed that one you can watch it on their website (http://www.nbc.com/30_Rock/video/episodes.shtml#vid=203619), and also on the big screen in the movie Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead due out on April 15th.
Blaine feels flattered that casting agents find him thin enough to play all of these depraved addicts.
We feel however that he is selling himself short. He is super talented and deserves everything good that is coming his way.
We could not be prouder of him if we tried. Yeah Blaine!

So, let’s pretend.
Your father is Brendan Gill of New Yorker Magazine, close friend of such notables as Jacqueline Onassis and Queen Elizabeth II. You grew up throwing apples at Ezra Pound and having Hemingway show you around Pamplona. From Yale, you go straight into the world of advertising. You marry well and father lovely children. The world is your oyster. And then suddenly everything goes horribly wrong. Really, really horribly wrong.
You lose your high octane job. Your mistress becomes pregnant. Your wife leaves you and your children feel nothing but contempt for you. And oh yeah! Here comes the brain tumor!
This is what happened to Michael Gill, a son of incredible privilege. And just when you think that this snobbish human being is without redemption, and deserving of his fate, in walks Crystal. Crystal is the manager of the Starbucks where Gill is enjoying his last vestige of his past life, a latte. When she asks him if he would like to apply for a job he does, partially doing so as a lark. It is when Crystal hires him and he begins working with people that he previously would not have given the time of day to that his real education begins.
I hope that we will see you in the Biblio when Michael Gill comes to speak on February 28th at 7:00 about his wonderful book How Starbucks Saved My Life: A Son of Privilege Learns to Live Like Everyone Else. He will be doing a book signing after his presentation.
And guess who is providing the coffee?

What passes for extraordinary out in the world is just ordinary for us.
Sometimes I lose sight of how wonderful the people I work with are and it takes a patron comment or the observation of an interaction to remind me of that very fact.
Last month a patron told Desketeer Alison that they felt we were the ‘Jet Blue of Libraries” for our willingness to go above and beyond.for our patrons. How nice is that?
So I end the week with a salute to my wonderful co-workers: To the Desketeers in all their fabulous Desketeer Diva-ness, to the Ref-Cadets who take on any and all questions (you would not believe the stuff they get asked!), to the Children’s Room Scouts who I swear must be deaf at the end of the day from all the activity that takes place in their room, to the Techies who if a computer can do, they will find a way to make it work for you, Shelvers who have the most thankless yet important job in the joint and to Admin-ministers who toil behind the scenes and do all the stuff that makes us able to open our doors every morning. Yeah us! We rock!
So next time you walk through the doors, check us out. You will be amazed at what we do.
