Get exploring this summer!

We're excited to announce our latest addition to the awesome Museum Pass lineup, and this one gets your family outside!  Have you ever been to the caves at Chatfield Hollow? Or checked out wildlife on the Sound from Bluff Point?

The 2015 No Child Left Inside State Parks and Forests Day Pass can be used to waive entrance fees at state parks and forests where there is an established parking fee. Fees are charged at all four state park beaches on Long Island Sound, as well as at numerous inland parks.  The pass also covers the admission fee for 2 ADULTS and 4 CHILDREN at state historical sites and the exhibit centers at Dinosaur (Rocky Hill), Fort Trumbull (New London) and Gillette Castle (East Haddam) State Parks.

Come by the Children's Desk today to check it out!

Great Read-Alouds for Preschoolers

Reading aloud with your preschoolers!
Reading aloud with your preschoolers!

Now that preschools are coming to a close for the year, are you preparing for a summer chockful of fun activities?

If you need to fill in some of the quieter downtime with great books for your preschoolers, try one of these read-aloud chapter books that will keep both you and your little ones entertained. They'll help build vocabulary while keeping your young ones enticed and engaged!

Did you know that the Children's Library offers access to books through BookFlix and Trueflix? These two online resources allow you to read storybooks and non-fiction books from Scholastic. You can read on any library computer or from home* by using your Library card.

There are picture books, easy readers, and non-fiction titles. The books can be read on the screen page-by-page or you can click to watch an animated book-video. There are hundreds of wonderful books to explore!

*Home access of the BookFlix and TrueFlix resources are available to Darien residents, those employed full-time in Darien, or non-residents who are contributors to the Annual Campaign at the $300 level and above.

Meet Ophelie!

Hi! I'm Ophelie, the new children's library intern.

I'm a Canadian Darienite who happens to speak a total of three languages, makes really good rocky road squares (which is also the ONLY thing I can bake), and is part of the New Canaan synchronized swimming team (uh-oh I'm a double agent). I also like to read. A lot. My favorite books all belong to the Vango series by Timothee de Fombelle, which is unfortunately in French, so I have problems getting my friends to read it. In close second comes the Harry Potter series, which I stubbornly refused to read for a few years after all of my friends started reading it, and in third is Princess Ben, a single book about a princess who is a tad bit spoiled and doesn't act like a princess because she doesn't want to comply with anyone's rules. She grows as a person when she discovers magic passageways, becomes a witch, and then accidentally joins the army before coming home, having seen her kingdom from more than one perspective.

Anyways, I'm really excited to be interning here for a month. Hopefully it won't go by too fast.
