Visible Progress

Any one who drives past our construction site at the corner of Post Road and Hecker Avenue can see we're making progress.

The foundation floor and walls have been laid, and the first floor is being formed and poured.

This is the view from our newly installed web cam, high up on a post over the construction shack:

How about February 2009, libraries declared obsolete. Meanwhile flooding and other environmental issues remain. How shortsited !!!
At least we can get coffee !

To take your comments in order:

The future of libraries is very bright, if they focus on serving their communities with a broad array of resources, programs and services. The New Darien Library is very carefully planned to build on the past, extend from its very successful present and look to the future. We're quite certain the library building will be seen as the cultural center of Darien, and that active use of our collection of books, DVDs, research resources and personal assistance will grow.

We have agreed with Planning & Zoning to institute a number of innovative measures to control stormwater run-off, including underground retention of rain water, and a demonstration project to model use of a bio-swale to capture and filter sediment before it enters storm drains.

Finally, the building is very respectful of the environment, and is planned to use so many energy-efficient design measures (including geothermal heating and cooling) that it is projected to receive LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification.

And yes, you'll be able to get coffee, as you can in a number of other local libraries, including Stamford, Greenwich and Westport, as part of our plan to provide a welcoming experience in the new building.
