The Town of Darien, Office of Emergency Management, will be conducting a full-scale test of its Code Red™ Emergency Notification System. The test will be conducted on March 25, 2009 at 10:00 AM. “The importance of communication in an emergency cannot be emphasized strongly enough” stated Emergency Management Director Marc McEwan.
We would like to encourage our residents and its businesses to participate and ensure that they are included in the broadcast of this test and future emergency messages. The town relies on commercially available telephone data for our emergency notification database. This leaves out our community members who subscribe to either unlisted phone numbers, voice over internet phones, and in today’s society the heavy use of mobile phones. Our other area of concern; is that many of our businesses and residents relocate to new locations and their phone numbers end up associated with their old address locations. This makes our ability to target a particularly affected population by a geographical area extremely difficult, due to its inaccuracies from out-dated contact information.
Please help us to help all of you by going to the Town of Darien’s homepage at
darienct.gov and enroll yourself into this important database. The link to enlist is located at the bottom of the town’s homepage.
Our community has tried to proactively ready itself for emergencies of all types; this is just an additional tool available to us, which we must periodically test these resources, before using it becomes necessary. The town has used this service a few times, since its inception, to notify residents regarding targeted zones, for burglary activity, and also suspected individuals spotted in a specific neighborhood. Our community members should not take for granted that their contact information is included, and their addresses are correct. The process to enlist is quick and simple and can be done on-line. However, people without internet access may call or stop in at the Fire Marshal’s Office located in Darien Town Hall.
