Can you identify the photo at right? It was taken at the National Democratic Convention sometime between 1910 and 1915. Thanks to the Library of Congress, such photos are now available on Yahoo's flickr online photo database.

The LOC announced earlier this year that it would add two of its historical photo collections to flickr:

  • The Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information Collection (1,600 color photos from the 1930s-40s)
  • The George Grantham Bain News Service Collection
(1,500+ black and white photos from the 1910s)

These collections were chosen based on their popularity with visitors to the Library of Congress web site. The photos are high-resolution and have no restrictions on publication or distribution.

To view the LOC photos, go to http://www.flickr.com/photos/Library_of_Congress. You don't need to have a flickr account to view the images, but you do need to sign up for a free account if you want to add comments or keyword tags to any of the photos.

Whether you're a current student, or simply a lifetime learner like me, you'll find these photos fascinating and a rich source of history.

Enjoy!
