A jewel of a book
»
»
Beautifully written, I was drawn from page 1 into the lives of the three main characters - each one very different from the other, yet tied together in ways fragile and strong. Mengestu has a style that just pulls you in. He writes with simple elegance, almost journalistic: you feel the political dangers of 1970s revolutionary Africa; the conflicts of the young men trying to find themselves among the turmoil of the times; the attraction between Helen and Isaac in a small conservative town in the Midwest. Dinaw Mengestu has explored the theme of African immigrants in the U.S. in other books -- this one really is a jewel.
