this historical account of JFK's time in europe reads like a modern day espionage novel with suspense, action, and chock-a-block with historical information. the romance became a bit much for me, but i *loved* the story and devoured it. Matthews has done her research and includes a great reading and resource list to prove it. this was the perfect summer read great for readers of all ages!
Sweet, then scary, then seriously freaking dark...but highly addictive. i couldn't put this book down because i wanted to know what was on the next page. they're perfectly in love, then perfectly confusing, the absolutely *twisted.* this is a terrific read and worth the wait.
long before Weetzie was a punk rock, amazingly cool girl kicking around on her roller skates, living and loving in sparkly Shangri-L.A., she was Louise Bat. she hated her name, and everything about her life in middle school. her dad left with no explanation and her mom descending into an alcoholic depression. she is bullied at school mercilessly. Pink Smog takes us to the very beginning when Louise becomes Weetzie. If you haven't read Francesca Lia Blocks' magical realism before you are in for a treat. her language is flowery and dramatic and the boundaries between the real world and the magical world are not as clear. No warlocks in her books. No, handsome boys like Winter who appear and disappear like an angel and falls under his evil sister's voodoo spell. The novels are short, but don't stop with this one! you can start with this or move right to Weetzie Bat - SO GOOD!
how can you go wrong? Linh Cinder is the best mechanic in New Bejing and when the handsome Prince Kai comes to her for help, she gets entangled in feelings and on quest to help end the deadly plaque. meanwhile, the evil Lunar people are threatening to invade the planet Earth...and Cinder is in the dead center of all of it. A fast paced, totally fun read.
