What more do we need to say about this book?
In addition to being an incredible true story of Henry, the slave who mailed himself to freedom, the illustrations by Kadir Nelson are absolutely breathtaking. A "must-read" for Black History Month and a great read aloud for older kids anytime!
Put simply - this book examines the 10 Amendments that make up the Bill of Rights, what they mean, how they have been applied, and the rights they guarantee. Would be good for research, but this edition is not very current. I haven't seen an updated edition, but hope it will be republished soon!
This book is so versatile! It can be read with children of all ages and deftly weaves English and Spanish together. Make sure to check out the incredible art - the moon on page 30 is stunning.
What's not to love about this picture book? The art is amazing, the character strong and noble and the story of Bass Reeves' life exemplary. This would be a wonderful picture book to read to older students studying Black History Month, The Wild West, or just for a fun Mystery Reader to bring to a classroom.
