We are hiring a Part-time Reference Assistant

Position Overview

Darien Library is seeking a friendly, energetic, dedicated individual with excellent reference and technology skills to join a first-class team of professionals to provide top-notch customer service and technology support to library users.
Responsibilities include staffing active reference and technology help desks, assisting users with print and digital resources, and providing basic computer help.

The successful candidate should have experience working in public or academic libraries. The candidate must be willing and able to work independently. The candidate must have enthusiasm for helping people and the ability to multi-task. 


Hours: This is a part time position that will include weekdays, evenings, and up to two weekends per month. Candidate must be prepared to work at least 10 hours per week, but will not exceed 29 hours per week.

Salary: $15.00/hour

Qualifications: College degree and/or experience in public libraries. Enrollment in or completion of an MLS program at an ALA-accredited library sciences or information sciences graduate program is preferred. The most important qualification for this position is excellent customer service and instructional skills. The candidate must have a demonstrated ability to communicate complex concepts in simple, easy-to-understand language. Familiarity with current information technology, including tablets, image and document editing is essential.

We are hiring a part-time Readers' Advisor

Position Overview

The Darien Library is looking for an enthusiastic librarian to join its Readers’ Advisory department. Readers’ Advisors staff the Library’s Welcome Desk and do a little bit of everything, but most of all, are counted on as trusted recommenders of books and other entertainment. We are big believers in the power of librarians connecting readers with their perfect book, and are always looking for new ways to do so.

The successful candidate should have experience working in public libraries or bookstores. The candidate must be willing and able to work independently. The candidate must have enthusiasm for helping people and the ability to multi-task. Above all, the candidate must always be ready to answer the eternal question: “What should I read next?”


Hours: Part-Time, 10 hours/week, primarily weekend hours. 

Salary: $15.00/hour

Superior interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate clearly and with sensitivity when responding to patron queries. Proficiency using basic office computer applications, such as Microsoft Office and Google Docs. Familiarity with digital technology, mobile devices and social media. Knowledge of Polaris ILS is preferred.

     This position would be a 50/50 split combination of system administrator and coder, reporting to the Assistant Director.

     * 50% of responsibilities would include ongoing maintenance and management of the Library's network and server infrastructure supervise tech staff and coordinate with vendors:

          * Perform regularly scheduled operations, such as backups, log analysis, software audits, and security checks.

          * Provide Tier III or equivalent-level tech support to the organization. Investigate and troubleshoot issues.

          * The development and maintenance of complete, in-depth documentation of and procedures for the Library's technology configuration.

          * Work with the assistant director on the development and tracking of the library's technology budget.

     * 50% of responsibilities would involve active software development:

          * Have experience working in a collaborative development environment using version control best practices.

          * Would need to become familiar with existing code-bases (SOPAC, Locum, Insurge, Databoard, etc)

          * Work with other Darien Library staff and development team partners from other libraries.

          * Take an active role in identifying areas for potential improvement.

      * Be proactive about learning and applying knowledge of emerging trends and technologies.

     * Develop and manage a departmental budget.

     * Other duties as assigned.
