Our Computers Are "Good to Go!"
There may be snow in the air, but there are thoughts of spring on the minds of the Darien Library staff. Our Spring 2010 Adult Technology Education Registration Lottery opens at 9 a.m. this morning, and runs through 9 p.m. on Tuesday, February 23. Browse our brochure and then click here to access our online registration form. Sign up for as many classes as you want. Classes begin the week of March 1st. We'll let you know by March 1st what classes you'll be attending.
We have an exciting lineup of classes planned for this spring. iPhone and Blackberry users can each attend a "Boot Camp" designed to answer their unique questions, while job seekers and business professionals can link up with LinkedIn, learn how to develop their online presence, explore advanced features of Facebook, and put together a business presentation in PowerPoint that will wow their boss and their clients! Our popular Travel Resources on the Web class will be back, along with classes on Web 2.0, eBay, Skype, and Twitter. We've included two 3-part, in-depth digital photography courses and a 4-part class on editing photographs using Photoshop Elements for all our digital camera enthusiasts. And, to complement a full slate of classes on Office 2007, we're offering an introduction to Google Docs--a great source for free word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications.
So, don't miss out! If you have any questions, just call our Help Desk at 203-669-5238 or send an email to jsgammato@darienlibrary.org.
See you @ the Library!

Back to School @ The Library
The leaves are just beginning to change their color and temperatures have cooled a bit. With the kids back at school, it's a perfect time for mom and dad to go back to school, too--at the Library! The Fall 2009 Adult Technology Education series begins on September 14th and runs through early December. Open to Darien residents, those who work in Darien, and non-resident Contributors to the Darien Library at the $300 annual level, these classes are a great opportunity to learn a new skill and/or refresh an old one. Among the topics being covered this fall are Office 2007, eBay, BlackBerry Boot Camp, Mail Merge, Photoshop Elements, and Adobe InDesign. Library staffers as well as professional guest instructors will be teaching a broad range of web-based classes, covering everything from financial research for the beginner to Flickr for Families. If you haven't entered the online registration lottery yet, now's the time. You can register for as many classes as you like. We'll let you know your registration status by September 14th. If you have any questions, email Judy Sgammato at jsgammato@darienlibrary.org or give her a call at 669-5238. We look forward to hearing from you!

Time flies. The Darien Library will soon celebrate its second month in a handsome new building. It’s been a busy and exciting time for both staff and patrons as we all settle into our new digs.
In the Power Library on the lower level, our technology users are being treated to an array of brand new equipment: computers, printers, MP3 players, and much more. But in addition to our spiffy new gear, the library boasts another novel resource: a completely re-designed website. The new Darien Library website is a unique asset, a portal into the many different worlds of 21st century information technology.
Beginning later this month, the Tech Center will be offering Library website workshops. These classes are designed to introduce you to our exciting new website and the many possibilities it offers for expanding your library experience.
We’ll show you how to manage your library account: review the materials you’ve checked out, renew items, pay fines, or place a new book on hold. But that’s just the beginning. We’ll also show you how to participate in Darien Library’s exciting new cyber community by submitting—anonymously or otherwise—reviews or ratings on any item in the collection. Found a good book or movie? Let us all in on it. Found a bad one? Warn us. Or pick up some good tips yourself from the community. Attention, researchers of every stripe: Find out how to use the library’s extensive online resources from the comfort of home via the Library's website. Many professionals consider this important benefit the library world’s best kept secret!
Our first workshop will be held in the Tech Center located within the Power Library downstairs on Thursday, March 26, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon. Classes will then be held every other Thursday at 11 a.m.: April 9, April 23, May 7, May 21, etc. Prior enrollment is not necessary, but seating is limited; you can reserve a spot by contacting Judy Sgammato at (203) 669-5256, or at jsgammato@darienlibrary.org. Come join us—in more ways than one!

Our Adult Technology Classes at 35 Leroy Avenue have come to an end with the completion of our final fall 2008 class "BlackBerry Boot Camp." Taught by Instructor Pam Barnet of Barnet Associates LLC, Wilton, Conn., this class was a first for the Darien Library and attracted a broad cross-section of students. Each student came with his/her own BlackBerry and Pam covered topics relevant to all and specifics for each.
In the 7 years since the Darien Technology Foundation Center at the Darien Library opened, on November 7, 2001, we have offered almost 900 programs and classes with over 7,000 participants. The early years saw lots of basic email and Internet search classes, but as our patrons became more tech savvy, we kept pace with classes such as "Photo-Sharing on the Web," "craigslist for Beginners," "Your Pod or Mine? (An Introduction to Podcasting)," and, of course, "Blackberry Boot Camp." It's been a wonderful experience sharing hot technologies with our library patrons. Our new library, set to open on January 10, 2009, will be the setting for a whole new set of adult technology education classes. If you have an idea or suggestion for a new class, let me know! We look forward to seeing you all in the new library!
