A Great and Terrible Beauty movie news

The first book in the Gemma Doyle trilogy is being made into a movie, as you may know. It's coming out in 2010. The author, Libba Bray, has some movie news in her blog:

"NOTHING HAS BEEN CAST. NOTHING. DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT YOU READ ON THE INTRAMANETS." She wrote this on October 10, so I think that even though IMDB has people listed in the three main female roles, we should ignore that.

However, that doesn't mean we can't speculate!!!

Who would make the best Gemma? The best Anne? Felicity? Kartik?

Get the books and audiobooks here -- they're some of my favorites.

Are you on twitter?

Twitter is fun because it's like blogging in text messages. It's a super fast and easy way of letting your friends know where you are, what you're doing, or what you're thinking about. It's actually a lot like the "status update" feature on Facebook. I like it because I can connect with my friends who live in other parts of the world.

If you have a Twitter account, make me your friend! This is obvs not my personal Twitter account, but it IS where you will find out info about the Darien Library, new books, new movies, new interesting websites, etc. It's also a great way to get in touch with me.

Add add add!!

"That's so gay"

GLSEN and the Ad Council have a new campaign out there to try to wipe out the phrase "that's so gay," which they say has been written online 80,100 times as of today!

Visit their website to come up with your own "that's so..." phrase. (My favorite so far? "That's so FAIL.")

Getting the facts

Even if you're not old enough to vote, it's important to think about where you stand on the issues and how you feel about the two presidential candidates. There's a lot of information out there and Senator Obama and Senator McCain have both made many statements about where the other stands on particular issues. So who do you believe?

That's when FactCheck.org comes in. It's bipartisan, which means it doesn't take sides. You can find out what the truth is about claims that both candidates have made. It's a great way to be involved in the political process and make sure that you're not allowing those tricky political ads to be your only source of information!

And don't forget to watch the vice-presidential debate tonight!

Annual knit-a-thon!

Teens, join us for our annual knit-a-thon, from 3-5 p.m. on Friday, October 17th. We'll be knitting scarves and hats for the benefit of those staying in the shelters run by the Domestic Violence Crisis Center (DVCC). The knit-a-thon is also open to adults and children--bring your friends and family! We'll provide patterns, knitting needles, and yarn. The final drop-off of hats and scarves will be on Friday, November 21. Registration (as well as previous knitting experience) is required and you can do that at the Children’s Room desk: call 655-1234 x117 or stop by!

The Twilight tour

If you're an obsessed Twilight fan (I know you're out there!), maybe you should consider going to Forks, Washington, the home of Edward and Bella. If you did, you wouldn't be alone: according to the Today Show, thousands of people have been visiting the rainy little town.

You can visit Bella and Edward's houses, the police station where Bella's father works, and the hospital where Edward's father is a doctor, among other infamous Twilight locales.

If you see a fancy Volvo speeding by, you might want to follow it home!

Sports book deal buzz

Superathlete Michael Phelps is writing a book! It's coming out really soon -- in December! (Just in time for those holiday wish lists.) According to trendhunter.com, the book will "cover Phelps’ philosophies on training and competition. It’ll also delve deeper into his personal life, discussing the challenges of coping with an attention-deficit disorder and being raised by a single mom."

Another Olympian, Coach K, is also working on a book [scroll down for info], this one with his daugher. It's about coaching Team USA to gold at the 2008 Bejing games.

And finally, Serena Williams just signed a seven figure book deal to write her memoirs. This one will come out in 2009. Did you know she's won NINE grand slams?
