Teen Summer Reading 2015
All programs are held in the Teen Lounge unless otherwise noted.
Refreshments provided at all programs.

Each time you borrow items from Darien Library this summer, save your checkout receipt. For every 10 items checked out, we will enter you in a raffle to win an awesome prize at the Finale Party.

*Teen Summer Reading Programs are for tweens and teens ages 12-18. Twelve year olds may join either the Children’s Summer Reading Program and/or Teen Summer Reading Program.
Online Reviews
Submit reviews on our website catalog for books you’ve read. Every two weeks during Teen Summer Reading, we’ll make a blog post at darienlibrary.org/teens that will include what comments you submitted. All review entries are eligible for an Amazon gift card drawing.
Bonus! Submit 8 reviews throughout Teen Summer Reading for an entry to win an awesome prize at the Finale Party.

Weekly Events

Game On! 
Every Friday, June 19th – July 10th at 2 PM
Come play the latest games on Xbox Kinect, Wii, and more. Show everyone who’s boss in competitive tournaments. $10 gift card to Amazon.com for weekly winners. On July 18th, the top two winners each get a $25 iTunes gift card.

June 19: Super Mario Bros. Brawl
June 26: Halo Reach
July 3: Wii Sports
July 10: Super Mario Bros. Brawl

Wednesday, July 8th at 2 PM Brushbot Workshop: Construct a brushbot made from the head of a toothbrush and wire its battery to make it race! You can design your brushbot any way you like!

Thursday, July 30th at 1 PM Teen Galley Party: Come check out the hottest upcoming books before they hit the shelves. Enjoy pizza and soda while browsing these not-yet-published galleys!

Friday, July 31st at 1 PM Robotics Touch Tank: Come play with Sphero V2.0 and Ollie by Orbotix robots. These two different robots can be programmed with just the touch of a finger. Learn how to control the robots to do anything and go anywhere.

Friday, August 7th at 1 PM Teen Summer Reading Finale Party:  Join us in the Teen Lounge for a raffle with lots of cool prizes, pizza, gaming, and more!

 

Music in the Stacks: Birdwalk

Sunday, July 26th at 5 p.m.

Birdwalk describes themselves as an energetic amalgam of soulful improv and technical precision, focusing on the world of live music. Bandmates John, Trevor, and Brandon met at the School of Rock in New Canaan and have been playing and writing together ever since. They take influence from Jimi Hendrix, Phish, and Frank Zappa. Come enjoy wine and hors d'oeuvres while listening to the chill tunes of Birdwalk in the Louise Parker Berry Community Room.

Extended Hours for DHS Final Exams

To help Darien High School students maximize their study time, the Darien Library will once again offer extended hours the week of final exams:

Monday, June 8 : 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Tuesday, June 9: 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Wednesday, June 10: 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Thursday, June 11: 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Getting Help While You Study: The Library offers many resources to students, including spaces for both quiet and group study, school supplies, and power cords. Librarians are also on hand to answer reference questions in person, by IM, email or phone. 

Study Rooms: Study Rooms may be reserved one month in advance in two hour increments. Students will be asked to give their name, phone number, and show their student ID. Reservations will be held for 15 minutes before being made available to others who are waiting.

Food Policy: Students are welcome to bring beverages and light snacks anywhere in the building.

Pizza, sandwiches, and fast food meals can be enjoyed at the café tables on the first floor. 

If you order food to be delivered to the Library,  please wait at the first floor entrance to meet the delivery driver.

Frosty Bear Café will also offer extended hours and will be staying open late until 9:00 p.m. that week.

So You Think You Can Do Something?

On Saturday, May 30th at 7 p.m. teens are invited to an after hours talent competition at the Darien Library featuring several bands and other acts from Darien High School. A $350 first prize and $250 runner up prize will be offered to the best acts, chosen by members of the Darien Teen Advisory Board. Every audience member in attendance will get a raffle ticket to win an iPad just for walking in the door!

Come to see all of your friends perform or come and be in the show! If you are interested in being an act, talk to any of the TAB members or contact Teen Librarian Erica Gauquier at egauquier@darienlibrary.org

For The Makers

For The Makers is a weekly program for teens where you can expect to create just about anything! We will be crafting everything from jewlery to robots. Any thing goes during this Thursday afternoon program 3:30-4:30 p.m.

In an effort to help students maximize their study time, the Darien Library will offer extended hours the week of mid-term exams, providing Blue Wave scholars access to the Library for additional hours.

  • Tuesday, January 13th:            9 a.m. -10 p.m.
