The ABCs of Writing a Great College Application Essay

What do colleges want in an application essay? How should students begin the writing process? What's a good topic? A bad topic? How can students make their essays unique and memorable? During this presentation, we'll find out the answers to these questions and more.
Presented by:
Sharon Epstein, an award-winning writer and college consultant. Her background includes 20 years in communications, two Emmy nominations, and a Writers Guild Award.
Matthew Dempsey, Assistant Director of Admission at Fairfield University, will share a first-hand account of the role of the admission counselor, read examples of essays that have and haven't worked, and talk about how essays are viewed in the context of the entire application.
This program is intended for high school students and their families.

When: October 27th, 2012 from 4:00PM- 10:00PM.
What: We will be viewing: Casper the Friendly Ghost, The Sixth Sense, & The Haunting!
Where: In the Community Room of the Library.
*This program is open to all teens 13-18 years old. Come hang with your friends, eat tons of free food, watch scary movies, and get into the Halloween spirit.*

Introduction to Memoir: Telling Your Life Stories
Join us as we discuss the best ways to begin writing your memoir, either as a full-length book or as individual essays. We'll learn how to focus on our life experiences, write a descriptive summary with plot points, and use the techniques of fiction -- setting, character, dialogue -- to enrich the storytelling process so readers will want to read your book.
Marcelle Soviero is the author of An Iridescent Life: Essays on Motherhood and Stepmotherhood. Her award-winning essays have been published in numerous publications and radio programs including The New York Times, Salon.com, Eating Well, New York Metro, Babble.com, Literary Mama, Upper East Side, Wilton, StepMom, Anderbo, Tiny Lights: A Journal of Narrative Nonfiction, and featured on The Story on National Public Radio. In August 2012, Marcelle became the Editor-in-Chief of Brain, Child: The Magazine for Thinking Mothers.

School is back in session and so are our weekly teen programs!
Here is the weekly lineup:
Movie Mondays (Mondays) at 3:00pm -Come watch a movie and enjoy a snack.
We Love Wednesdays (Wednesdays) at 3:30pm - Come learn how to make a cool new craft project.
Minecraft Time (Thursdays) at 3:30pm- Play Minecraft on our very own Darien Library Server. Build special items to compete to win a prize.
Game On! (Fridays) at 4:00pm- Every other week come test your skills in a gaming battle against your peers!
Manga Club Recommends...Part 1

Every Thursday night at 7:00 PM in the Teen Lounge the Manga club meets to talk about--what else?--manga (well, anime too)!
We also snack--last week we chomped on Pocky, the week before Strawberry Cake Rolls--and talk about what j-pop artists we've been listening to lately. At our first meeting we watched the first two epiodes of FullMetal Alchemist, and at the second we watched the first episodes of School Rumble and Scrapped Princess.
This week we snacked on Meiji Hello Panda biscuits and watched the first two episodes of Kino's Journey (pretty good...but a little disturbing too, lol).
