Are you a fan of caped crusaders, manipulating mutants and villainous vixens? Then come on down to the Teen Lounge every Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m., starting Nov. 1, and become a part of the Library’s Comic Book Club (the first order of business will be coming up with a better name)! Every week we’ll discuss the comics and characters we love (and the ones we love to hate); discover new series, and set about creating our own heroes, arch nemeses and sidekicks. Writers and artists wanted!

Banned Book Week: Sept 23-27

Banned Book Week is an annual event hosted to celebrate our freedom to read whatever we want.

Every year hundreds of books are challenged based their content and in extreme cases are pulled from shelves. A recent example in the media recently was Persepolis. Could you imagine if titles like Divergent or Naruto were suddenly taken away because they were banned? Neither can we, so to promote our access to all books the Teen Lounge is hosting Banned Book Movie Nights!

Everyday after school from Sept 23rd-27th there will be a movie in the Teen Lounge @ 3:30pm come join us!

Darien Library to host Fairfield County Minecraft Server

The Central Library
The Central Library

Minecrafters!

On Saturday, September 7th, we cut the ribbon on the Fairfield County Minecraft Server.  Darien Library is proud to be hosting and managing the server, but this is a multi-town project that is designed to bring Minecrafters in the region together in a safe and creative environment.  Libraries currently participating are Darien, Westport, Wilton, and Norwalk.

Minecrafters:

The new server features a common spawn-point where all players can gather and socialize--the Central Library.  From there, you can teleport to your town's very own world where you are free to mine, build, and craft to your heart's content.  Curious about what kids from other towns are up to?  You're free to visit their worlds, but you can only build in your own world--the same goes for everyone else.  Worried about griefing? We've got it covered.  The server will be running many of the popular plugins you're used to including Grief Prevention (so that you can claim areas to build upon) and Core Protect, so that if someone does mess with your stuff, we'll know who it was and we can roll back the changes.  If you want to play, bring in your library card and tell us your player name and we'll add you to the server!

Parents:

We've conceptualized this server from the beginning to be a safe environment for kids and teens.  Before players can use the server, they'll need to come in to the library and present their library card and tell us their player name.  They will then be granted access to the server and given permission to build in their hometown world.  We will know who each player is and how to get in touch with them should an issue arise.  Safety and fun are our top priorities!

To Get Started:

Come in to the library, ask to be added to the server and get online.  To connect, start Minecraft, click on multiplayer and add a new server.  You can call it Fairfield County Minecraft and use fcminecraft.org as the server address.

We look forward to building with you!  Dig on!

This Fall teens will be able to express their inner artist with three specialized programs in the brand new Darien Library Fall Art Series for Teens. Teens may sign up for all three programs or just one if they choose.

On Thursday, September 12th at 3 p.m. teens will have the chance to create works of art to be hung on the Teen Lounge walls! Help us beautify the Teen Lounge one canvas at a time.

Thursday, October 10th at 4 p.m. teens will be encouraged to write on the Teen Lounge windows. That's right, we are cleaning the windows so that you will have a fresh start in decorationing them with one a word description or sentence identifying "Why I love the Library". So come enjoy pizza and music while expressing your love for the Library.

On Thursday, November 14th at 3:30 p.m. teens are invited to create all things art though crafting activities. We will be making our own notebooks and friendship bracelets as well as getting crafty with candy sushi. Come join in the fun for any of the mentioned activities.

For questions about the programs please contact Teen Librarian, Erica Gauquier at egauquier@darienlibrary.org for more information.
